83 911 SC Top End Rebuild - Little Help

Hello I’m new here and just wanted to introduce my self. Dave from Salt Lake City and have owned my 83 911 SC for 12 years and I’m looking for a little help, advice and suggestions.

It was running low on power and starting to smoke bad until warmed up and leaking oil. I was going through a divorce at the time so I garaged it for 6 years. I towed it out this July and found what I think is a pretty good Porsche mechanic in our area. I could not turn it over by hand and had him pull and break down the top end of engine, not wanting to crank it over and damage anything. We have replaced two (obviously) bad cylinders and pistons, two bad rocker arms, one bad cam shaft on the same side, the cam chains and rails, all of the fuel injectors, all of the external oil lines, reground the valves, (they all looked good) replaced the guides and had the heads done, coated the pistons, bored and honed all cylinders and installed new rings, new top end bearings, and a couple sensors.

We are replacing the clutch disk and resurfacing the pressure plate. We are flushing the entire fuel system.

I wish I had been aware of you guys 6 months and 6 thousand dollars ago.

This guy seems to know his way around the 911 engine and has raced and rebuilt quite a few of them. We should have it back in and running in the next couple weeks.

I just want to check with the guys that know and make sure that I’m not missing anything obvious before bolting it all back together and installing the engine.

Any advice or suggestions would very helpful before we bolt this engine back together and I write any more checks.

Little Help….

Thanks
Dave

Assume you are replacing the T/O bearing. May be a good idea to replace the T/O bearing fork also.

Tell us more about boring the cylinders. Wouldn't that require new pistons?

Head studs. my car had a top end done under the p. owners watch, the paperwork doesn't mention head studs and i worry about finding a broke one, every valve adjustment.

Thank you

Yes we replaced all of the head studs and a new TO bearing and fork is a good idea while we have it apart. He was concerned that the spring fingers on the pressure plate look like they may have been hot at one time and we’re talking about maybe replacing it.

I could be wrong about the bore. The cylinders and pistons all look brand new and I just assumed that a bore was involved. The heads look great.

He seems to think the bottom end is tight, within specification and turns nice and smooth and advised me not to split the case. I hope that’s a correct decision.

Thanks again
