Question Bloated and soft oil hose?

Hi folks,

I'm a first time 911 owner with an '85 Carrera, and my soft oil line (hose) looks fishy to me. The whole hose feels really soft to me (as compared with other automotive hoses I've seen, and it appears kind of bloated near the clamps at each end. The whole thing is kind of jiggly and seems to sag under its own weight under the car.

See the pic below...

I know it's simple and cheap to replace, but I'm wondering... what could cause this?

Thanks,

Curtis

I agree, no bueno on that hose.

It's actually kind of bizarre. I don't know what would cause the hose to do that. Age doesn't seem like it, when they get old, they get hard and cracked, etc. That one is really stretched out.

To be that expanded, and soft, is strange. It's almost like the oil got really, really hot at some point and started to melt it.

It may have been replaced by the PO with a cheaper non reinforced hose that was not made to be compatible with oil or for that type of heat.
Its a fairly important hose so I would change it sooner than later.

Mine did that too. Probably heat, exposure to oil and age... Very easy to replace during an oil change.

I keep that very part within my bonnet,..for fear that something could damage such an easily exposed, critical piece of rubber...

Best,

Doyle

Get a factory hose installed before that bloated hose bursts and then you will need a new engine. There are certain items where you don't cheap out and this is one of them.

Thanks for the tip. I guess I should put one in my "bonnet" or at least under my hood in my tool kit!!

Yeah, I know it's dirty.

I bought the hose from a local race shop. I think it was around $2.50-$3.00 per foot.

Measure several times before cutting if you go this route. Getting the "S" shape was a test of patience.

I did something similar with mine. It's on an older (2.2) motor.

Problem is I once failed tech since the line looked like it "might" be touching the exhaust. I had to take it off and go back to the rubber hose. So I think I need to get some 90 AN fittings in order to use the stainless hose.

Mine split on the top....fortunately. Unfortunately I was in BF LA on the way to a Dodger game. Did a Mickey Mouse repair and got to the game and home.

There's a thread on it someplace.....cheap hose, at least relative to the others.
