Intake nuts for both manifolds and carbs

Hi All -
I am neck deep into a 914-6 conversion. Engine compartment is done and I pretty much have everything ready to go parts wise less the nuts for the intake. I am having a very difficult time finding the smaller nuts that hold it all together. Our host has told me that they are no longer available, as have other porsche parts houses. Does anyone have any leads?

Thanks very much -
Scott S

The 12mm nuts with the rounded heads? I just used a 13mm nut from the hardware store as a replacement. Very common thread pitch and size.

A lot of BMW M8 threads use 12mm hex sizes. I planned to track some of those down for my carbs. I also have used some copper-ish exhaust nuts from VWs that have 12mm hex heads. Found them at JC Whitney.

Also might want to consider the Porsche exhaust nuts for the heat exchangers. People typically call them barrel or in-hex nuts. They're the ones you use with the long hex tool up through the access hole in the heat exchanger shrouding.

The thread/pitch is no problem - it is the actual diameter of the nut. The off the shelf nuts do not allow room between them and the manifold/carb castings to get a wrench on them. I am using standard height PMO manifolds with 40IDTP 13c's
Here is a pic:

Those are the same manifolds and carbs I had, in fact my manifolds came from PMO with off the shelf nuts. I was able to get a wrench on them, a couple of them you can can only get a slight turn on them, but I think you can do it.

Can be done.. yes. But the 12 mm nut size fits so much nicer. You actually have to lift the carb off the throttle body as you screw it on to use the 13 mm size. Perhaps PMO can sell you some. The 12 mm ones came in my kit from Richard...

These are easy to find, you want M8 nuts that are 12MM ATF (across the flats, or in German SW or Schlusselweite). This is a JIS spec, not a DIN, JIS B-1181. If pelican can't get them for you try McMaster-Carr, about five bucks for a pack of 25.

I know you're not worried about the pitch. Just mentioned the BMW stuff since a lot of their fasteners are even-numbered wrench sizes. I mentioned the Porsche barrel nuts because they are the internal hex type. So you're wrenching from the top and not the sides. I know top access isn't much better, but it does help.

Believe me, I know what you're dealing with. I have Weber 46s on my '79 racecar!

Have you tried AAA Metric here in town?
If they don't have them in stock They should be able to get them pretty quickly.

AAA metric is AWESOME! I rounded the long bolt that goes through the turbocharger on my old 951. AAA had in in stock on a Saturday! This is like a 8" long allen bolt, very odd.

I cant believe it....

So, I ran out to run a couple of errands and grab lunch in the time since my last post. The co-worker that tagged along was raving about some tiny Mexican Food joint, so we stop in (for you Denver guys, it is located around 28th and Kipling in Lakewood). Behind this little place (good tacos BTW) is and equally tiny old Ace Hardware. I figured it couldn't hurt to look.

Asked two guys that were clueless on what I was looking for. As I was leaving, the 80 year old guy at the register asked if I had found what I was looking for. I told him no, but what I was looking for was not all that common. Explained it one more time. He didn't even answer me - just shuffled back to the hardware section and went to one specific drawer.

"how many do you need?"

Sure as Sh!+, M8, 12mm heads....

I laughed and asked him if he happened to have any french tail light lenses for a 914-6 sitting around.... he didn't get it.... Ha!

Don, the screens came from Cloud 9 Tea - for some reason I am not able to pull up a webpage address for them.

I believe Japanese cars (Honda, Toyota, etc.) use a 12mm hex on their M8 fasteners as well.
