3.6 variants question
As I attempt to educate myself per expected 3.6 swap into my 86 Carrera I am curious to know differences among 964/993 engines. Am familiar with Varioram lash up but would like any input concerning 3.6 overall variants.
Thanks EP Slick |
Hi Paul,
964 3.6 has around 250 hp 993 3.6 w/o Varioram has around 270 hp ...diff between this and the 964 is the head, maybe valves, and definitely exhaust. OBD-I Varioram 993 has 282hp and a ton more torque due to larger valves, vram flapper thinggie which you can retrofit back to older 993. OBD-II You can add vram to an earlier 993 pretty easily. |
Look at Bill Verburgs 964 vs 993 sticky at the top of the 964/993 tech forum.
My take on differences is: Very early 964 engines didn,t have head gaskets and have had leak issues. > late 964 engines switched to a plastic intake which is supposed to flow better. >993 has a lighter crank and I think the 964 uses a harmonic balancer pulley. >993 exhaust flows better and that might explain most of the 30 hp difference > 993 in 96 adapted a varioram intake system increasing hp and torque over the 95. > 993 uses hydraulic lash system, eliminating routine valve adjustments |

The top 2 IMO are '94-95 993 & '96-98 RoW vram 993 due to their simpler OBD1 electronics and improved architecture primarily in the heads and air metering next is 964 still has simpler 55 pin OBD1 electronics hardest to do is the '96-98 US vram 993 w/ it's 88 pin OBD2 electronics |
There's also some good information here.
