Only 5 shims!

I had a roadside blowout of my alternator belt a few weeks ago far from home without a 24mm socket (lesson learned). I was able to stretch a new belt over the pulley half and off I went. The weather was warm and the belt seemed fine. Now that cold weather has settled in here on the east coast my belt has been squealing. I went to tighten it today by moving the shims as described in Wayne's book and found I only have 5 shims. It has been this way for at least the time I have owned the car (3 years)

How safe is it to drive with 5 shims? Everything is tight on the alternator shaft and the bolt did not bottom out. Started the car and the squealing is gone.
Thanks

When I changed the belt on my car I discovered that it had seven shims. I bought six new shims and put half on the inside and half outside - too tight. Four inside and two out seemed to be about right.

In other words, shuffle the shims until the correct tightness is reached. This is about a quarter to a half inch deflection mid way along the straight length of the belt.

No worries, but five shims says that the pressure on the pulley was not correct.

Mail me the keys and tell me where you park it. It's unsafe I say!

NBD, just put another one on. I have run with 4 before, I think I bought it that way. Think of how imprecise it is to use shims anyhow. Here's a tip to installing them....I tape the tow bunches together before placing on the shaft. Otherwise, they can slide off and get mangled under the nut.

you need 6 in any combo 5/1,4/2,3/3,2/4,5/1 because they said so ........

it does actually make a difference ..... the space from the inner face of the nut to the "bottom" at the alt is to be a designated distance (pulley half, shims, washer) if you leave out shims it allows the nut to go further down the threads than designed, that then put stress on the alt side and can cause damage .... maybe not right now but its not good.

a similar would be why run five lug nuts?
the weight savings alone would be worth the risk right?
and three should hold it , right ?

no ..... five lug nuts per stock wheel and six shims in your pulley setup ..........

On our '86.

We have two shims between the pulley halves, and four under the cup.

The belt is Porsche P/N 999 192 176 00 9.5 X 710 mm.

With out the proper # of shims you run the risk of having a loose pulley half and destroying the key on the fan... don't ask how I know...
