72 915 tranny rebuild question

i'm worried about that pesky main input shaft seal.
when i dropped my engine and pulled the tranny there was
mucho oil everywhere, the clutch disk was oil soaked.
when tranny tipped on end oil dripped out the seal.
so... i drained the oil it was clean.. no bits no burnt smell.
i removed the nose section, no visible wear anywhere.
so...
what do i have to disassemble to get to that leaking seal?
can i pull the differential and leave the gearing alone?
or do i have to completely disassemble the gear clusters?
any advice would be appreciated.

the trans needs to be disassembled. diff out and mainshaft out. the seal loads in from the inside of the diff housing. great engineering there.

or must i disassemble everything?

end cover off, gears under it off, shift guide plate off, centerhousing off, pull side detents out, engage 3rd gear, all nuts off retaining plates, pull out both shafts, shift rods and shift forks as one unit. use both hands, pull up and wiggle. install the same way. be sure the detent in the diff housing is between the shift rods on install, as well as the center housing detent pushed all the way down before installing the housing.

MAKE DARN SURE that you put a layer of electrical tape on the clutch splines of the M/S BEFORE you put the thing back together!!! If you don't tape the splines they can cut the seal lip of your new seal, and you'll be doing the same job in a thousand miles!

For reference... http://porsche.wikidot.com/

Click on "915" under "Page tags" and you will find a lot of help...

Think 72 was the only 915 year that required seal removable from inside.....right?....John?....others?

Wil; early '73s were also made that way. Then Porsche came to their senses!

apart finally

well, i completely disassembled the transmission.
i have to say everything looks good.
but i also must admit i have no idea what i'm looking at!
what exactly does a worn dog tooth gear look like?
how can one tell the condition of the syncros?
do i have to disassemble the gear stacks to go forward?
i'm using peter z's great wiki site but need more info of what bad looks like.
the good news: my main bearing race is solid.
peter or grady are you out there?
thanks
