wind roar in early 911
Hello,
I recently test drove a 1969 911T and at about 25 to 30 mph a loud wind noise started coming into the cockpit from the dash/windshield area. Does anyone know where this might be coming from? Also........ if you know the answer to this one, you can probably tell me about a leakdown issue on the same car - all cylinders except the middle on on the left (#5?) showed 10% on a good Snap-On tester, this cylinder showed 60%. We replaced the plugs, ran the engine, tried again and got the same result. Noise was coming from the exhaust so seemed to be exhaust valve. My question is, can you re and re one cylinder head to remedy or must they all be taken off for head bolt tightening etc.? Thanks in advance or any help. |

Early 911's have side vent windows on the door and when the seals go bad you will get wind noise. Check the windshield seal also. I had a 69 911 with bad seals that was loud.

tpickstone,
Welcome to the Forum ![]() You will find a lot of help here. Is the car a coupe or Targa? In ’69, the coupe has a fixed vent window and the Targa has an opening vent window. Also, inspect the windshield gasket. Is the trim fully in place? Does the gasket fit the frame? Is the gasket old and hard? Any sign of body/rust damage repair in this area? Inspect the door seal. There is a transition between the door frame and the window frame. The door gasket (on a ’69) must continue to seal over that ‘gap’. There is a little plastic piece used on later 911s that smoothes the transition. Is the gasket intact and supple? There are many other places for wind noise. Even the trunk gasket must be perfect. More serious is the low cylinder. Yet another fresh sparkplug and an extended drive will tell. Add a compression test to your cylinder leak test. Cylinder leak should be 2-4% for a proper engine. I would also inspect the sump screen and cut apart the oil filter to inspect the element. Be sure to inspect the transmission drain plug magnet. How much rust is there? What is the prior crash damage repair history? ALSO – Have a very knowledgeable Porsche person do a through PPI. Best, Grady
