Fuel filler lid release?

Went to fill up the '87 911 today and when I pulled the release nob the nob and cable came out in my hand. Is there an alternate release option anywhere?

Low fuel light just came on, maybe 10 miles ago, so I should be good to go to the shop about 20 miles away.

You could try the search here, there is a thread about using some stout string. Slide the string under the aft end of gas lid, then pull towards the front of the car. The string will engage the lid release and then the release should trip. This worked for me, much to my relief. Replacing the cable wasn't very difficult. You might enjoy sorting this out for yourself.

Cheers Richard

My advice from a previous thread:
Quote:
Get a flat cotton cloth shoestring. Slip it under the rear of the fuel door, hold both ends of the shoestring and pull it gently toward the front of the car. The fuel door will spring open.

You can practice this parlor trick anytime. I've opened mine with the bottom of my T-shirt as another emergency measure.

Carry a spare shoestring with you in your emergency bag-o-911-tricks.

nice trick to know. I'll remember this one, especially the T-shirt option. Could come in handy (but I hope I never have to use it!)

Thanks!

the fuel filler door cable is another one of those maintenance items you don't think about till it becomes a problem. Squirting a quality lube into the cable jacket at the cable release end and check the cable clamp. I did this just a couple of weeks ago and now my fuel door pops open instead of barely opening at all.

This is a good time of year to lube/grease key locks, throttle cable, hood and door hinges etc.
