best price on momo prototipo wheel?
respectfully asking the question here after checking pelican first. they don't have them. skimmed through excellence and found the wheel source has them for $159. anybody else know if there are better prices from another source? also, what are the variations on these wheels - foam, leather, suede, size? thanks.

AFAIK the real Prototipo has been NLA for a long time. I have seen a few NOS ones on the market in the $400 territory. Do you have contact info for the Wheel Source?

I bought one recently for about US$100, new but with unpainted/aluminium spokes. It was a "run-out" model. I will have to paint the spokes black myself and therefore will lose the "prototipo" screen printing.
I have no idea if they have any left (I'm guessing yes), but the place is in New Zealand. I also have no idea what it would cost to get one shipped to the US. Cam

Since we've got this thread going, can somebody educate me on these steering wheels? I've heard them mentioned many times but I'm not sure what they look like. Were there more than one version? Maybe a photo or 2? Thanks. -- Curt

we found a batch of NOS MOMO prototipo steering wheels. We were awaiting shipment and verification that they are the "real deal" but since this thread was started, we decided to let you know. They are due to arrive in the next few weeks. Please contact us if you are interested. They are NOT cheap!

I'm assuming that this Prototipo listed for sale and 'in stock' at $155 is not the same as the original?

Has anyone verified that it is not a stale page? FWIW I have found the Prototipo listed on a few sites but when I emailed/called they said NLA. LTB Motorsports, Sube Sports and GPR (all pretty major Momo dealers) say unobtainium too. I actually don't even need one, but if I find one at a 'decent' price I will buy one anyway just to have...in case I ever get a 917 or something.

The pic above comes from:
http://www.alpinemotorsport.com/momo%20catalog.html They have it on the web page for $155. I rang the New Zealand guy. He still has them (but at "full" price - $165 or so). And only anodised aluminium spokes. Cam

Is the Model 07 the generic MOMO style of the original Prototipo with Porsche stamped in it ?
The Rally MODEL 07 has MOMO stamped in it. Like the picture cegerer posted. I just bought one here from Pelican. Not on the catalog. Called Darrin. Had a Rally MODEL O7 in suede with the yellow center band, delivered to my door 3 days later for $159.

Chris, you can't possibly be as confused as me on these wheels. I just spent 20 minutes reading thru all the old PP threads on Prototipos and learned nothing other than everybody seems to want one. What I'm trying to figure out is the precise difference between the NOS/used Prototipos for around $400 and the (apparently?) still available Prototipos for around $160.
Come to think of it, I'm not really sure why I need one of these - I kinda like my bus wheel. -- Curt

okay so i guess i was a little more in the dark than i thought. according to the wheel source they call it model 07 and state "same steering wheel as supplied by porsche in factory race cars." i am assuming then that the $160 wheel is a repro which i can live with. i just want one that looks like the wheel in the recent R that appeared excellence.
cam, thanks for the link. that is the one i want. so there still seems to be some confusion. can anybody else offer more info? i would like to know the difference between the not so cheap-hard-to-find-$400 wheels and the readily-available-$159-mod 07, other than being original stock. i am talking about "physical" differences. thanks, bob 68 L with monte carlo |

Ahhhhh.
The Mod.07 is NOT the early Prototipo. It is very similar except around the ends of the bottom spoke where it meets the rim, and also it has a yellow band at the 12:00 position. There could be other diffs too, but I'd have to see them side by side in person to tell for sure. The statement that it is used in factory race cars is correct! It was used in the 911 cup cars etc. after the early Prototipo was discontinued!

Prototipo pic
Here is a pic of a Momo Prototipo, there are a few still around, if I wanted another one I would not spend too much time looking for a deal more of just finding the real thing.

The MOMO 07is:
dished (a lot) not written prototipo, but Momo at the same place hard to get without the yellow stripe at 12 o'clock available in red and black suede, and smooth black leather glued on leather The Prototipo is: sewed on leather smooth only. NO yellow stripe NLA NOT dished The bottom spoke is not covered down to the rim BTW in the early race cars, the factory would put what they had on the shelf at the time. It was between the Prototipo and the Nardi, which was about the same, but had long triangular holes in the spokes instead of the round holes on the Momo GeorgeK |

The main advantage of the dished wheel is that it stands a lot closer to the driver, which is good in a 911. Another less obvious advantage is that there is nothing in the plane of the rim, minimizing the risk of hitting the hub while changing the position of your hands, like in hairpin turns.
BTW the yellow Momo logo goes away with paint striper, not attacking the black anodising, making the wheel more discrete, and IMO closer to the prototipo. GeorgeK |

So the wheel advertised by AlpineMotorsport (and pictured in my post above) appears to be a genuine Prototipo and is obviously not available, and certainly not at $155 as they indicate. Thanks for the info! -- Curt

Because my MODEL 07 is still in the box ............... I measured the "dish", 1 5/8.
Looks about the same as the MOMO that's on the car now. ( going to my 914 project ).
