sporto to manual conversion

I want to convert from sporto to manual. I was thinking, can you just remove the vacuum operated solenoid that engages and disengages the clutch. Then just install a manual clutch cable. What do you all think.

To convert a Sporto to a manual trans, you will need;

1x transmission with throw out bearing release fork/parts
1x flywheel
1x clutch (disc, cover & TOB)
1x shift tower
1x pedal assembly
1x clutch cable
Miscx speedo-related items
1x front trans mount
Miscx hardware, oil lines, CV joint components, etc.

...and a lot of time! BTW, many of the above parts will be different depending on which trans you use (901, 911, 915, etc.).

I can understand wanting to convert as I have ridden in one frequently. No soul. But, they are cool in a way and I understand Porsche raced the Sportomatic in rallies.

Is it dead, or are you just wanting a 5-speed?

I just want a manual. I already have the tranny, But i started thinking that it must all be the same except the clutch engage and release. I am going to keep all the parts just because they are so rare. I thought that the sporto tranny has a standard clutch and FW.

It also has a torque converter...

Used to drive one occasionally, if you shift 'smartly' through all 4 gears, it was moderately peppy as I recall.

A slug if you start in 2nd then shift to 4th.

Didn't they run a couple Sportos in the early 70's, won class at LeMans and were 5th or 6th overall?
(Hmmm, am I recalling correctly that these were 914-6's with Sportos?)

This is a much more involved job than you suggest. I'd also urge you not to do it, but its your car.

The conclusive list is on this thread: DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker :: View topic - cost of converting a sporto
