Porsche Crest 79 SC Shifting woes and oil leaks

Okay so for three years my shifter has argued with me when it comes to shifting high revs 1st to 2nd. It's been adjusted and still no help. It is in the shop now for the oil leaks, and they swapped out the gear oil for a cheaper brand, and I am being told that has made a huge difference. I will keep you posted, but mainly the issue was something like "Break Band" ? was sticking at higher revs.

I also have had a oil leak that is just annoying as I have to constantly clean it up. We are thinking replacing all 4 oil tubes should do the trick. I still may have a leaking oil cooler, but that is still unknown. My goal is to have a NON Leaking SC. That will make me happy. I'm always after the leaks as I just cannot stand that drip under a freshly waxed car!

They mean the brake band which is a replaceable part.

Find out what 'cheap" fluid they used as I'm sure others would be interested in that info. I found the Swepco 201 made a difference in my 915 box but.

Do you pause when shifting between 1st and 2nd? You absolutely cannot rush the shift.

I agree, my sc just uses first to get going. I used to run higher rpms but it didn't like that.

I think they mean Cheap as in regular non-slip 80W90 gear oil. Synthetics are not recommended for your 915.

Which shop in Denver is this? Don't feel obligated to say of you don't want to. Just curious.

Its been said before, but I will say it again. From your left clutch foot to your right hand on the shift, you must ensure that the peripherals to the trans itself are 100%. Considering that the various parts are cheaper to replace (bushings, clutch cable, pedal rack bushings) and that they must been in good nick this is money well spent. That is, if it turns out your 915 must be rebuilt you do not want to R&R it with crappy worn parts surrounding it.

What did they find when they drained the trans oil? Parts, fuzz? That would be telling to an owner.

EDIT: On the oil leak: John Walker just put in expandable oil return tubes on my SC (no way I am dealing with those heat exchanger fastners!). With this done, and the oil pressure seal done prior, my car is FINALLY not dropping a Valdez of oil. I keep a pan with telltale butcher's paper under my engine for just this purpose - to detect leaks. I was so very happy to see nothing after the oil tubes were replaced. Finally a cut above my MGB/TR4/TR6 experiences!

EISENBUDS - the best shop in my area I'd say for air cooled. I have not been told what they found in my oil. I'll ask when I pick up the old lady. I was mistaken at first because when they said oil tubes, i was thinking they (another shop) replaced my oil tubes when they switched out my exhaust to the 74 OEM exhaust, but then I was corrected... those were my oil LINES. which are still just fine. So the tubes were never done, and I guess they were really leaking a consistent drip. HOPEFULLY that will be all.

I have to just mention, every since i swapped out the exhaust this car runs so much better! Sounds better and it seems to perform better. BUT STILL... It is quite un-quick compared to many many cars out there. I dream about launching 0-60 in under 4 seconds!! That new 998 is said to go 0-60 in 3.3 seconds!!
