lightweight tailight....not 911R type????

Hi All,

I know I have seen a few posts....tried a search and did not find any info.

Looking for a repro tailight housing in plastic or FG....not 911r type.

Anybody have a US based source?

Thanks
Kevin

GREAT!

let us know when you're ready

skinnerd 11-18-2010 07:37 PM

Wow, those look great.
I would think you could sell a boatload of those!

I'll order a pair when you've got them ready for sale.

jeff eelkema 11-18-2010 08:37 PM

Interested as well, let me know.

Not sure how far down the design path you are, but will these take LEDs or original bulb holders?

earlyaircooled 11-18-2010 09:08 PM

Yep I'd like a set and fronts too

PcarPhil 11-19-2010 02:26 AM

I'm in for a set as long as they fit well and can hold bulbs properly!

shahram 11-19-2010 04:18 AM

i want a set to. so hurry up :)

ghost1001 11-19-2010 04:19 AM

Cool....let us know.....that CF sure looks nice!!

In the mean time I am working on my own light weight version using the original housings; focused on material removal. I will be using LED strips so that will simplify things a bit.

Anybody have a weight on a fully assembled factory unit with housing, lens, wires and bulbs? Mine are already apart….so hard to get an accurate weight.

Then I will weigh my version and see what can be saved.

Kevin

I've got one of those shelves at my house :( Great idea... best of luck.

I would keep those on my dining room table. those things are pure sex, in use they will not be visible. All that for what?!

Actually I will take a pair ASAP....

Someone in Germany sells a white plastic version injection molded I think for about 100 Euro (plus shipping)

shahram 11-19-2010 09:48 AM

got a web link to the German seller?

Kraftwerk 11-19-2010 01:20 PM

It was on ebay last spring now I cannot locate them..

Rücklicht luftig? Need to find the proper German words for' light-weight tail-light'.

Anyway, they are not on German ebay any more...

Google + Leichtbau Rücklicht porsche 911 = News Details

It looks like this is the lightweight plastic tail light housing mentioned above. Cool but pricy at 226 Euros a pair! But if you're looking to save weight these plastic ones are 360 grams for the pair versus 2600 gram for the original metal housings.

911pcars 11-21-2010 09:57 PM

About 5.5 lbs. savings overall. At about $300+ USD, you determine whether it's worth it.

Evan Fullerton 11-21-2010 10:36 PM

5.5lbs is 5.5lbs and it comes off the right spot and is a zero downside mod unlike something like a Plexiglas rear window. Light tail light bucks aren't high on my future mod list but they are on there.

If your ultimate goal is saving weight and don't mind tinkering and cleaning lenses, you can mount lightweight LED trailer lights on the fender and then mount the stock lenses to cover them and provide the stock look. This is done on race cars all the time.

The problem for a streetcar is that you might need a load compensator and that the stock lenses will get dirty being that they are not sealed on a housing.
