Greatest-ever Driver's Car
The December edition of Classic and Sports Car arrived in the mail yesterday. It contained a suppliment that contains brief takes on what the staff, plus more than 100 of what's billed as the most important people in the classic world, think are the 25 best road cars of all time.
There's a bit of everything here and it's all fun to read - great cars all. But I thought it would be well to post the magazine's opinion of what the best driver's car ever is. It's the 911 RS 2.7. The story is written by Alain de Cadenet, who calls the car, "just the most perfect thing to drive," and, "it's the most timeless, inspiring driver's car of all." I should add, I guess, that the competition was formidable. It included all the great cars - the ones we'd all like to own and drive, everything from Ferraris to Mini Coopers to AC-Cobras to - well, you name it. The magazine is always a fun read, even without a suppliment like this. I don't know if newsstand copies come with the suppliment. If you're at all interested, it might be worth checking.

I always thought Alan de Cadenet was a wise man (and a good racing driver).

Alain seems to be blessed with an extremely rare mix of great driving ability and usually having something worthwhile to say.

Classic. Yes, I think he's a stand up guy, too.

Just curious, was there a close runner-up? I might have to go get the magazine...

Runner-up? Yeah, there was. After considering the likes of 250 GTOs, GT40s Cobras, the Top 5included the Mini Cooper S (classic, not BMW), Elan, Alfa 8C, McLaren F1 - and of course the Porsche 911RS. I think it's also worth noting that the 993 was the 20th-ranked car. Not bad. Wish I owned one of 'em.
As noted, they chose the Porsche. This pleases me because I see the choice as an endorsement of what all of us here know. We may not be sufficiently lucky to own 911RSs or RSRs, but we own, and drive 911s. The DNA is there. These are wonderful artifacts and it's great to see the design recognized as the ultimate driver's car.

I have two of the cars (classic mini and 911) - the list is right, both are fantastic to drive!

![]() I feel smug because I have two on the list as well-my '82 SC and a '65 Elan with great period racing history.

My first car was an original 1275 Cooper S which I rallied and slalomed, and now I have a 911....(admittedly,not a 73 Carrera RS), but honestly I can see why they rate them both very highly as "drivers cars", they are both engaging cars to drive. The steering on both is without power but comparatively light and extremely responsive to input. That is to say, they both invite you to improve your technique and "push the envelope" ....both very fun cars!
