Lee, I have one and almost brought it to Supermans engine drop. (I say almost, as I thought better of the idea in regards to crossing the border with it...too many questions from the Customs.)
I've placed it underneath the car for a look and it seems ideal for the job. Works very well on my motorbikes, too. ![]() BTW...send me a PM and tell me how many decals you need over there. They're going like hotcakes!

Have you guys seen/ tried the engine cradle/ jack adapter the guy on ebay sells (he manufactures them). Its made to hold an engine and transmission as a single unit . It looks pretty effective.

Regardless of what kind of cradle one has, it comes down to the stability of the jack you are using. The POS that I use will never see another engine drop (literally...BTDT). The disc rocks in it's bore and the wheels aren't far enough apart......your basic $90
Sears thingy. I even welded a 10 X 8 plate to the disc.....helped not at all. The land battleship that J. Walker posted a pic of is what I really need, but can't justify the expense. Gonna take a real hard look at the HF motorcycle widget.

I've used a 'motorcycle' jack to remove/replace '84 drivetrain twice. (Rear seal leaked first time, had to do it again) Much easier than a regular jack alone.
Bought it at Costco around $100. My only complaint is that it has a 'lever' to release pressure and it drops too fast. Try to find one with a 'screw' like a standard bottle jack.

Jay:
I have purchased several tools from Paul Wilding. All products have been super high quality and Paul is a pleasure to deal with. I spoke to Paul about the engine drop unit because I thought my 2.7 was heading for the floor this winter. Turns out that studs were all in place and the noise was a valve tapping. If you have any questions Paul's e-mail is PAUL_WILDING@email.msn.com.

Thanks for the input. I'm glad to hear his stuff is as good as it looks. He seems like a pretty nice guy too.

I was looking at the same thing after receiving my Harbor Freight catelog. Looks like it might work well.

Speaking of harbor freight, try their long frame standard jack. It looks huge, but its really a standard jack (which means the jack pad isn't any taller) with a longer arm. It really gets the car up a LOT higher. Cost is 150, but they have them on sale sometimes for 100. Much nicer work enviorment.

Lee, went and looked at a motorcycle jack this afternoon in Missoula. Interesting. $99. 1500 lb.
Basically a bottle jack with a scissor lift. Needs about 15 inches of clearance. No problem, with the car on jacks. Nice wide platform. About twice as wide as my floor jack. Front wheels straight. Back wheels swivel. My only concern, is that the scissor lift collapses toward the shift coupler. With much more forward travel than the floor jack. Because of the scissors. So you have to pull back as you lower the shift rod out of the tunnel. You'd want to put an 800 weight on it and see how much control you have with the valve on the bottle jack. Too fast and it would be worthless. My 02c.

For those who prefer not to use eBay, Pelican now sells Paul's adapter tool. Here is the link:

I've used my motorcycle jack to take my turbo and transmission out. Works well. Jack I have lifts to 24 inches is good for 1000 lbs. and has a 5 ft. t-handle bar for guiding the jack around. The handle is removeable and I did have to put a two-by-four under the bell housing to get the weight off the shift rod in the tranny, but it went in and out in 45 minutes.
