Location of Shoulder Belt hole in 84 Carrera (based on 86 or newer)

Hey all -

I am installing 3 point seat belts in the back seats of my 84 Targa so I can put in my kid's car seats.

Rather than buying the retractable, I have purchased non-retractable generic belts. I did this as I like the idea of being able to really tighten in the seats (AND am saving about $250.) They are high quality belts - so I don't believe the $ savings compromises safety at all.

My problem is that while the back shelf pad has a cutout for the upper seatbelts, the hole for the upper belt attachment is not marked or drilled in an 84.

I believe they started doing this in 86.

I want to make sure that I drill at the appropriate spot - for safety AND future retractable belts if i decide to go that route.

Does anyone have a picture OR measurements as to where the upper hole should be on the rear shelf? Also trying to figure out if I need to drill through TWO layers - as the upper shelf has 1 layer of sheet metal, an air pocket, and then sheet metal to the engine compartment.

Any help is appreciated!!!!

Here is a picture of the area I am dealing with. I have circled where I THINK the hole should be drilled.

Jonathan

New York City - Targa 85 to 87 owners - Help?

If there there are any 85 to 87 Targa owners out there that would be willing to work with me to peek under your rear deck, I would appreciate it.

Looking to get exact measurements for location of upper seatbelt mounting holes.

I do not have these on my 84 - though they starting including them in 85? or 86?

I'll buy you lunch or beer or wine or we can just compare cars!

The 3 point rear belts didn't start until 88 or 89. Anyway, the shelf has a different shape with an indentation for the retractor to sit down into and it's right about where your sound pad is cut out for it. . This allows the rear cover a place without sticking up so high.
The metal in that area is only one thickness I think. You might do a search as many have done it before.

I've read pretty much every thread on the board for Rear Seatbelt installation (and car seat installations.)

Just looking for exact location of the Upper attachment holes on the rear deck before I commit to drilling the holes.

Any targa drivers out there with the factory holes - would love a pic or measurements!!!!!
