Stuck in gear

G'day all, I had a look see at a 911 yesterday.
Apparently it is stuck in gear. [5 spd]

I don't have the technical expertise to do a gearbox teardown, so I'm looking for things to check before things go that far.

I have access to a hoist & a Haynes manual.

I am having another look tomorrow, more indepth this time. Car should be on the hoist by then.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

if you are lucky, the fork is just hung up, take off the bottom inspection plate, and pop the fork back into place. You are gonna lose all your oil , and i have never had luck using silicon on that cover.

The 915 transmission can do that if the shift fork inside the tranny worn, bent or loose. It happens to me every now and then if I am not careful - the transmission stays in reverse when I select a forward gear. So two gears are engaged at the same time. Most times that happens to mine I can recover by shifting carefully into reverse and then out again.

If that doesn't work you need to take off the shift fork cover plate. This will dump the transmission oil. So prepare for that or drain it first. Once the cover is removed check that the shift fork mounted to the cover is securely attached. Through this cover you can access the three shift rods and take the tranny out of gear. Next I would make sure the shift coupler in the tunnel is adjusted properly.

My transmission does this occasionally. What I have found is if I push the gearshift forward when it is stuck in 5th, it is able to release.

When its stuck in gear the problem is the swivel connector on the shift fork in the back seat. Change the swivel and you ll get it out of gear with the new connector on. I m not big on the after market bushings because they have to be in perfectly to work properly.
I do like the Stompski racing coupler...no connection to him thought, just something I ve used.

Start by throwing out the Haynes manual.

you cannot access the reverse/5th shift rod through the access plate if it's in reverse, which is what usually happens. remove the backup light switch on the end of the trans and force the pin inward. that pops the shaft into neutral position, for that shaft. might want to try that first, if the reverse lights are on. (if they normally work). not as messy as removing the bottom plate.

No no no, you keep it, and use it as a jack plate so you do not scratch the bottom of your car...
