heater hoses too long?

Has anyone replaced their early 911 heater hoses and found that the fancy type Pelican sells are way too long? Even with the hose scrunched to its minimum length it is 2-3 inches too long to fit onto both the heat exchanger and the flapper box simultaneously.

Before I cut up my $$$ hoses I want to make sure I'm not doing anything stupid. Maybe the 12" kind are for the SC type heating system with the blower motor?

Just got everything back together - I ended up cutting the Loprene hoses down an inch or two on both ends to get them to fit more gracefully.

Surely I'm not the only one who has run into this?

side note, jeff wonders why every time he goes under that car he comes out black... oil leaks to fix someday i guess.

The hoses are sized to fit many different applications, and indeed have to be cut to fit. Some of the paper/aluminum hoses directly from Porsche have been superceded to a more general hose that requires 'modification' to fit into some of the older cars.

For example, the neoprene hoses fit perfectly on the 914, but sometimes have to be shortened on the 911 depending upon your configuration...

i had the same thing...

the black ones from pelican...I think they are the neoprine ones...

are doubled wrapped...ie the spring does not un coil if you cut them

the paper ones are a mess once you start cutting...well wortht he couple extra bucks

Wayne -

Thanks for the reassurance. When I noticed that the same hose was listed for 65-89 I figured that some adaptation would be necessary. Better too long than too short. You do lose the nice wrapped ends when cutting though, it's a shame!

82SC -

I was worried that they would unravel after cutting but you are right, these hoses are pretty nice. I don't think it will be a problem.

They're actually not automotive parts at all, but come from the aerospace industry. Much, much better than the original paper/aluminum hoses.

Never use a hose from a hardware store either - I made this mistake a long time ago when my thumb was quite a bit greener. It melted, and sent fumes right into the passenger compartment.

Lost a few brain cells that day...

What the hell is everyone doing up so late???

Wayne,
I emailed Sam about this very same thing.
I was quite confused about the selection section for heater hoses.
I need two pieces to go from the xchangers to the flapper boxes... I found those no problem.
And I need enough hose to go from the engine mounted blower motor to the left and right exchangers.
I want either the aluminum or Neoprene (sp?) hoses.
I got so frustrated I finally gave up.
You find one piece...click on the photo, and it only shows the hose for one side.
Then I couldn't find the other side.
When i did run across pictures of the other side, it was for a different type of hose.

Do you have a part number for enough hose to do an entire engine? Either aluminum or neoprene?

you are right he is very cool...

using my...ahem...electronic parts guide I find the part number to be...

901 211 196 00 for the shorter on on the driver's side of the engine

901 211 522 00 for the longer one on the passenger side of the engine
