Turbo Tie Rods on 72 911T
I'm considering upgrading to Turbo Tie Rods on 72 911T.
How much of a difference will it make and is it worth it. I figure the Tie Rods are about $129, alignment is a $100. Is it all worth it? |

My opinion: if you track the car, it's worth doing while having other suspension upgrades done. If it's just a street driver, I don't think you're going to notice much of a difference.

I don't track my car that often, but I do autocross, and there certainly a few roads out here that are "nurburgring-like". I needed tie rods anyway, I did the Turbo tie rod update, and I would counsel Ian to spend the money and upgrade those little rascals soon, so he can start enjoying sharper handling. Watch out though Ian...you'll be pricing thicker Torsion bars out soon after you make that upgrade.

I did the upgrade on my 914 (same front susp.?) and the difference was noticable. I would recommend putting some rack spacers (bump steer spacers) and lower the front a bit... that also made a big difference! Doing it all at the same time is much easier because you already have the rods off the rack...just 2 more bolts and add the spacers and youre done! I think just knowing that part of the suspension is tight and new is quite reassuring. After looking at the differences in the tie rods themselves... you appreciate the design of the turbo rods campared to the rubbery stock rods (ends) Brian

Ian,
Also a 72T owner. I do 5-6 DE events and definitely noticed a difference in the steering feel (precision) when I upgraded to Turbo tie rods. The stock rods used a more flexible rubber joint between the steering rack and the tie rod arm. If you autocross, you'll probably appreciate the feel. Are you changing your suspension bushings also? These are other areas that can benefit from a freshening up. From there you can go shocks, torsion bars, sway bars, strut bar, turbo brakes, 3.6 conversion.... Rick

Ian;
By the way, 45% of your cost is expected to be for the alignement. $100 sounds kinda high. If you check the tech articles on Pelican, you'll find some on doing your alignment yourself. I'm in the process of setting my own car right now using the string method. I haven't seen any information on that method here, but it is pretty straight forward and only takes about $20 to set up the first time. I'm writing it up and will submit here hopefully in the next couple of weeks. The point is that you should be able to save most of that $100 that you have budget for the alignment.

If you are only changing the Tie-rods, only the 'toe' needs to be adjusted at this point.
I needed a 'special' wrench to tighten turbo tie-rods on my 71. (at 3 AM of course) - had to grind a standard wrench thinner.
