US 3.0 change to Euro hp spec

I have a 80sc with SSI and 107K, I live in the middle of the Pacific, Kauai, very limited access to air cooled experts. This December there is a factory trained mechanic form Canada coming on working vacation. My goal is to increase the HP on my SC, any advice would be appreciated. I want to retain CIS, what would be the 1st step. I would like to increase the low and mid range torque. Can you achieve 215hp with a change of P/C, cam ect. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Happy Turkey Day!

Regards-

JS

You might consider a Euro spec piston/cylinder set, a 964 cam grind. Maybe even have your heads cleaned up for better flow.

Just read Lindy's and Brads threads on there high performance 3.0 builds, 6-10K doing the work yourself. 3.6 would be sweet.

Backdate your exhaust and get a sport muffler, if you haven't already.

moving to full euro spec would get you there, but that requires different pistons and a complete euro fuel/air delivery system. These things are hard to find. If you want to retain your existing CIS then you are pretty limited in options. 3.2SS will run on CIS $$, but oh so worth it!

+1. Seems a shame to spend all the $'s for a 3.2SS and keep the CIS. PO increased the CR on my car to Euro spec (believe this is done by skimming cylinders), I added SSI's and M&K sport muffler and it runs pretty well. Others swear by recurving distributor which is not too expensive.

I was in the same boat, a 3.0 (SSIs and M&K) with about 200k miles and smoking! I started with a 3.6 plan but had to down scale with my economy. So I went with a 3.2 with a fresh rebuild, LSD and used the SSIs and M&K. Not a 3.6 but wow! What a change from a tired 3.0 to a fresh 3.2, also from CSI to Motronic.
Very pleased with the results! In a different economy I would have spent a few more bucks and had the ultimate with the 3.6, next time.

That is an interesting idea. What can one get for a decent 3.0 these days?

Depends on condition, they are getting a little long in the tooth. The 914 crowd likes them.

Finding a good 3.6 is also an issue. PLUS he has a shipping issue being in Hawaii.

3.0s can go for anywhere between 3 and 5K. Head stud condition is the biggest problem. Corrosion also kills exhaust studs making them a beeyotch to crack the nuts w/o breaking studs. Most 3.0 conversion upgrade exhaust to SSIs or in the case of a 914 going to the special HEs they use or headers.

3.6s in good condition....if you trust the seller 4500 to 7K. The most troublesome is the wiring mods, so many have been done there are more than a few to choose from. Timmins (Maryland) is one but he's a bit slow and has a day job. PMS has one, pricey and the guy is a bit much in ego....but so is Timmins. TRE does them, dunno if they sell a kit but he's generally a nice guy. TRE and PMS are west coast.

If you go to the last page of the "250 bhp from CIS" thread there is a post from "Bruboy" with a couple of links to threads detailing his experience this is very good stuff.
