Oil change and valve adjustment - is time an issuse

I'm planning to do an oil change and valve adjustment this weekend - both a first for me on a 911. The oil should not be an issue but the valve adjustment might take its time (I'm going for backside).

With the oil out of the engine while I work the valves - could corrosion in the engine be an issue if I can not get the valves done in a few days and new oil in? That is, if it is not done this weekend, could there be problems if I do not finish it until next weekend?

Cheers, Björn

Wouldn´t have thought so. If you´re not driving it then the oils not circulating around the motor either. You can always leave the Valve covers on till you get to adjusting them. If its in a nice dry garage all the better

If it is heated to at least 60 degrees F (15 C), then you can run a dehumidifier to extract the dampness you mention. I'm doing that and I'm amazed at how much water I toss every day.

Not sure where I would pick up a dehumidifier for a 35 slot garage

Hopefully it will never come to it anyway, one day for a valve job should be plenty...

Cheers, Björn

I am also due for a valve adjustment --- for my 83 SC (3.0L). Perhaps you've thought through this project/process and can share some insights.

I've looked into my Bentley manual and also Wayne's 101Projects book. Both illustrate how to do the job. However, what I don't understand is what needs to be removed "out of the way" in order to be able to reach into each valve.

Are we talking about removing major items in order to get to the valve? Is access/reach from the rear of the car or under the car? Do you need to remove the back seat to reach the inside parts?

Also, are there 12 valves to adjust --- 6 cylinders X 2 (1 intake, and 1 exhaust) --- does one adjust only 6??? Or are there 24 valves?

Your insights would be appreciated.

BTW --- good luck with your project and let us know how it goes.

I wouldn't worry about corrosion, especially over just a few days. Every part will still be coated in a film of oil which will prevent any corrosion.

Months is what I'd worry about, but not days or even a couple of weeks. If you park the car for 2 weeks, you aren't worried about the cams and followers rusting either ... like it was said above, every surface you worry about is coated in oil.

Drained with valve covers open for a day or two no worries, months yes. 35 car garage? What does it have in it?

Actually, I haven't thought it trough as to what has to be removed and such. I'll just remove the valve covers and take it from there...

But I'll make sure to post my progress and note some beginners learnings.

It's a bit of both. Half are everyday use cars and half are enthusiast cars, most notable are a couple of Jags, a 996, a 60s Mustang, a race breed 964, an Aston DB9 and a Ferrari Califonia.

Thanks for clearing out the corrosion issue, much nicer to not work with a tight time limit!

Cheers, Björn
