911 SC Air Compressor?

Hello,

Can anyone explain me what is this device for?
I have noticed that some 3.0 engines doesn't have this part installed...

Here is the picture of what I am talking about:

Hi Alex,

It's an air pump for exhaust emissions. I am not exactly sure how it works but the general theory is that air is pumped into the exhaust and the oxygen helps it burn more completely.

+1, Bob is correct. It is an air pump used for California emissions, and basically makes your car run like crap. It is not needed, unless you have emissions laws. It is easily removable, but there will be some holes or hoses that will need to be plugged up. There are a few threads on this, if you do a search.

Not quite...

All USA SC's had them in 78-79. Also the earlier 2.7's had them. Not just CA cars.

Does NOT make the car run like crap at all. Porsche would NEVER have done that.

Many counties/states still require them to be in place on the car. Like here.

For instance there are many cars here (including mine) that have them, the car runs great. No negative impact or performance unless you count the 1/10 HP that it takes to run it.

They pump air into each of the 6 exhaust ports, to help burn hydrocarbons.

The were discontinued with the 80 SC.

I don't think they were discontinued but relocated to the rear of the engine and driven off the cam. My 81 Turbo had one and it failed pretty quickly. My 91 Turbo has one too although I just removed the air injection system as the tips had started to burn off and I had one go through my turbine and destroying it. Cost a couple of grand to repair.

Thanks for your posts.
It all sound very strange to me because mine is a 82 Euro SC...
Is it recomended to keep it, knowing that there is no obligation to keep it in my country?
If anyone has been doing it, please leave some information.
