HELP: CV joint boot change

Hi

I need to order new boots for the right drive shaft of my 911 carrera, year 1985.
I´m not really sure which repair kit I need to order.

The outer boot is broken and the inner boot is OK. As you can see in the attached picture, it is one of those shafts where only the inner CV joint can be taken apart.

Can you please tell me the parts I´m gonna need to fix the right side (inner and outer boots)?

I think the right part to replace the inner boot is the kit (000-043-301-08). Do you guys know the part number for the repair kit of the outer boot. The repair kit (000-043-301-08) includes a metal lid (997-332-267-00) that I don´t really need in the outer CV joint.

Thanks in advance

Miguel

Do you think the CV joint, itself, is OK?

There's one kit for just the rubber boot. There's another kit that includes the CV joint and the boot (and the attendant straps). And you can buy the whole axle (with CV joints and boots already attached).

The labor is about the same, no matter how much you replace or not. Even if you just replace the rubber boot, you have to take the entire axle off (or at least disconnect it, though I think it's easier to change stuff like the CV joint and rubber boot if it's sitting on a bench in front of you instead of you hanging upside down underneath the car to replace the stuff while the inboard side of the axle is still attached to the car). Once you've got the axle off, it's not difficult to swap out new CV joints and boots. I did all 4 CV joints at once.

You'll also need new bolts (6 per CV joint x 4 joints).

I replaced the outer boot on my '88 when I had the engine out. I bought a boot at a local parts store for $25. Carquest I think. It was a German mfg part and came with lube and clamps. I thought the inner and outer were the same, as my kit also came with the tin cap used on the inside CV.

Given that the boot is completely gone and CV exposed, you will need to tear the joint apart, fully clean and re-grease. Be sure to use the special CV grease. Most kits include one. Be sure to look for scaring in case the grease became contaminated with dust or grit.

I was lucky. my crack was very small and wasnt' really exposing the joint to dust. I was able to do mine without pulling the axle off the hub (just slid the boot over the transmission side. I am not sure if you will be able to disassemble the CV joint for cleaning without pulling the joint off the hub. I was unable to break the nut free.

Good luck,

Larry

Your car is in the grey area between the small CV joints and the large CV joints used on the 86 and later. I think the sizes are 100mm and 110mm but I'm not sure. the bigger joints use bigger bolts as well. You can probably do a search to figure out which ones you have. The wheel end of the shaft has a CV joint that is not removeable (as far as I can tell). This means you would have to remove the boot and try to clean out the CV joint as best you can with out taking it apart. You have to remove the inner CV joint to remove install the new boots. I really think in this case it will be better, easier, and much less messy to just buy a rebuilt axel shaft. I did this on one side of my race car this year. Saves hours of work and aggrivation.

Use someone standing on the brakes to loosen the outer nut on the driveshaft.

Wasn't there another thread on this? Because it's the same pic.....

Pull the trans side, crack the castle nut AFTER pulling the cotter pin. Remove the whole assembly. Measure it.
