Was it a good buy??

I was given this today by my father. He bought it at an auto-parts auction.

I don't know how old it is or what it's worth, but he paid US$30 for it. It's immaculate. It's going to look good stowed away in my trunk!

Can anyone tell me if they're hard to get or valuable? Not that I care to sell it, but we have had three P-cars in our family and none of us have seen anything like it before.

My old man even selflessly gave it to me, rather than throw it into his 928S2. What a guy!

Exactly! It's a "Porsche" air compressor. can't believe that it's never even been used.

Ever seen one before? I sure haven't!

It's the factory air pump for the collapsible spare.

Here it is in the Pelican Parts catalog.

Did these come with a new car as standard equipment originally?

I guess they would have to supply something for those collapsible spares.

I have one of these...nothing special, just the standard air pump that came in my 92 C2 for the collapsable spare.

As I am aware, on UK spec cars these items are fairly common.

A word of warning for you, the lugs that hold the lid shut are very weak and hence prone to breaking off.

My own compressor has never been used but one of the lugs has broken.

A great find and excellent value!

Yep; standard issue for the collapsible spare. Came with '74 and later cars. My AJUSA catalogue lists the same thing new for $69.00 although I believe I've seen it elsewhere for $49.00. Good deal.

jlex.

jlex is correct, except that is not exactly what came with the earlier (70s and early 80s) cars. Those earlier cars did have a similar pump, but it came in a cardboard box. The one pictured above is the factory pump for the later car.

Not rare at all, in fact its one of those "loss leader" items that some dealers like to advertise in excellence, etc. Still, $30 is a price that can't be beat!

$30 is a great price, I found a new one on eBay for $43. They tend to get lost in the older cars, but some sort of pump is really essential. I had to use it the other day and it worked great.

Thanks guys.

He was unsure if he'd been "had", but I'm happy and I guess that makes him happy.

Have a great weekend, everyone! It's raining like hell here, so I doubt I'll take my baby out, but we'll see what's what...

I have a question, "Why the **** are these missing out of almost every car that is resold." Do previous owners take them out of their car when they buy them and stick them in their garage? It wasn't until a year after buying my car that I realized that I needed one of these to inflate the tire,(I thought they had some kind of pressurized canister hidden below it.) I bought a cheap one at Sam's club to replace it. I think I'll stick a Porsche sticker on it so I don't lose concours points.

Hello

The early cars had a Byrische Metallwerke air pump in a blue cardbox.
Standard Porsche 2,7 came with the fill bottle from the RS.
Then came the newer version with the orange plastic housing. I think the 79 to 80 was the split .However all 81´s I had seen had the orange ones.

The Box came with the 964 but had been used in the 928 previous. First sight was in a 944 turbo S.
The similar unit where also used by Audi.

The pump also has adapter nozzles to fill bicycles and rubber boats so thats whay the go uproad. I know a guy who bought the used unes to make little sprayguns for car design graphics or model spraying.

Thos pumps are the best on the marked and can fill the sparetire in 5 minutes.

My brother bought a cheap Hong Kong pump ( 10$ ) in france when he had a puncture ( long story he forgot the original pump on a camping place ). That thing needed 1 hour to pump up to 1,5 bar pressure as the thing always overheatet and finaly the piston didn´t make much pressure. Enough to humble to the next gas station ( Yes, european gas stations have air and a air meter ).

Well there is sometimes a unvisible difference that will cost you more time and nerves than you save on good stuff.

Grüsse

I have the same inflator and use it to "pop" out the brake caliper pistons when I do a rebuild. It's strong and works well. I paid $49 about 2 years ago on e-bay.
My car came without any inflator... 3 porsches in my family, none of them had an inflator.

That is because the original owner gets to keep the air pump. It is the rules.

You do need these if you have a space-saver spare (can't use the tire without it). I think most people remove them to use to inflated basketballs, etc. and don't realize that they are stuck on the highway without them!

I have 50 of these in stock right now, our price is $56.80.
