74 -77 cars are a dime a dozen under 10k and they will range in condition from just running, to great condition.

I pose this question in the form a small but true story......Nick (who knows nothing about cars) bought a 80SC and drove it for a couple months before bringing it into a shop here in Daytona. It was there for a couple months getting reringed I was told (about 3k was the bill). The car is sky blue, blue interior, a turbo tail....sport seats, power windows and a fair interior. Well about 1 month ago Nick sold the car to another guy "Lee" (for 5 K). Nick had closer to 12k into it (the 9k that it was bought for + about 3k for new rings)

Well, Lee said to my wife (all 3 work at the same place) that he brought the car in for service (a couple weeks after the sale) and he was told that the engine was a 2.7 and not a 3.0 Lee told my wife that he beleives that Nick had no Idea that the Engine had been switched........... and that he really does not care anyhow because, it's "peppy" (Lee has an Alfa also)

the Kicker is, that the mechanic was working on his sons 911 engine at the same time that Nick had his car there (for a couple months) Humm.................

Finally the question......In your mind did the cars value increase, stay the same, or decrease when you found out the engine was not a 3.0 but a 2.7 instead. I think we all know the answer.

Given the chance to do it all over again 7 years ago I should have saved more money and bought an SC cab instead of the second 911 I drove.
Back then, I didn't Know where the rear hood release was. The guy who I bought it from showed me where it was.

7K lighter in the wallet I drove the 77 911s 2.7 home and the education began........ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!

Huhh...i had a few beers, so i'll give you a honest advice:

- Carreras are good and reliable, EFI instead of CIS, better power...preferable, pretty reliable.

- 930's are special beasts....cool, powerfull and expensive to maintain...if you don't need a car but a statement, this is it.

- SC's are like 930 minus all cool stuff and 100 horsepowers ...people who bought them are painfully aware of this and are constantly trying to convince themselves and each other that their cars are basically OK...so they organize themselves into funny clubs with funny names ("SCWDP"????) and such, just to avoid thinking about it ... :D :D :D

hi,
get the newest car with the lowest miles that you can afford. projects, and resto's, are getting to be very expensive. the 3 liter engine is bullet-proof ( even though i still drive my old '69T ) the SC is probably your best choice.

I'm no expert, but...
I've had a '75 S 2.7, an '81 SC and an '85 Carrera over the past 12 years (current have the SC)and they've all got their plusses and minuses.

On the '75 S, the dreaded 2.7 head stud goblin appeared after a year of ownership. I went with the 3.0 replacement engine idea & I highly recommend it. Middleyear cars are lightweight, fun to drive, but handling limits are lower because of rear tire size.

For $12k, the SC is the best "overall" car, by far. Change out the exhaust to SSI or get lucky and find a '74 exhaust in decent shape (I did!) and the power level is nicely matched for the chassis. And they are VERY reliable. I prefer the mid-range throttle response "snap" of the 3.0 CIS to the 3.2 DME cars.

For a little more money, there are some nice Carrera deals, and they can be enjoyed with stock power or chip-enhanced. The 3.2s DO make more power, but you have to use the upper end of the revs to really enjoy it.

Glad you're enjoying the BB. The maturity level (for the most part) is refreshing.

You guys in California and Florida have it made. Try finding a clean 911 in the snow belt. These cars are rare here so owning one is twice as sweet!!

One great way to go is to pick up a 1974-77 car with a 3.0L transplant. I have found that even if you place a 3.0L in these cars (very easy to do), then the value doesn't increase significantly. This is despite the fact that they are more like an SC now.

I have seen these conversion cars in the $6-$8K range. There's nothing wrong with them, as long as the work has been done well...
