How many miles between Swepco 201 changes on a daily driver 915 tranni?

Hi All,

So, how many miles between Swepco 201 changes on a daily driver 1981 SC (915 tranni of course)?

I spend most of my life going from stop light to stop light at 40 miles per hour. So, 4th and 5th gear do not get much attention. I only have a 4. 5 mile trip to work one way, so, it is a sad application for a 911 - but, she is my only ride and I love her :p

Thanks,

Ray

I thought it was 30,000 or 2 years?

Peter Zimmermann 12-10-2010 01:17 PM

My shop did trans oil (915s) every 15K miles, but a three year interval for a commuter, even if you only went 5,000-7,500 miles, is OK.

My tranny guy recommends changing it whenever I do engine oil since we got all the stuff laid out and we're in the general area. Seems like decent enough advice.

Just my opinion, but that is totally excessive. Compare the conditions of your engine oil to the transmission oil. Four to one would be a lot in my opinion.

15K is what i do. then i refill with kendall 80/90 GL-5. most folks seem to like the shifting better with the kendall.

every 15k with Kendall... per Mr. Zimmermann from Red Line suggests (and Mr. Walker too).

I know this is a long shot but i'm trying to find Kendall oil for my 84 911, does anyone know who would ship this to Australia? I'm not having any luck locating it locally so i'll have to get it from the states. My 915 thanks you in advance :)

Scott try calling Petro Lock in California, U.S.A. 661-948-6044
If they can't ship it to you send me a PM.

On my DD cars I replace annually. Mr. Spoon put it best from what I saw. The gear fluid has no filtration, no cooling, and is basically a bath for the trans. He recommends with every oil change, but I think that's excessive on a street car so I do it once a year. At $10 + shipping for a gear oil change it's cheap insurance.

On my track cars I replace every 2-3 track days. I use Kendall and love the way it feels.

Is Kendall 80/90 GL-5 also known as Kendall NS-MP Hypoid Gear Lube?

Hi John,

I won't make you feel old with the Mr. Walker thing again.. I just clicked on your shop link - and WOW - beautiful shop.

I want to thank you very much for taking the time to be on this forum and offer guys like me advice. That is very much appreciated. It is great to see that you still have that passion to help us out.

All the best and I hope your business is doing well.

OEM 915 use Kendell K8090

OEM 915 with LSD use Kendell K8090L (with LSD additive in it)

DRACO A5OG 12-16-2010 06:47 PM

Update:

Just changed to Kendell 80w90 + LSD Additive.

It is smoother. I plan on replacing it again in about 1000 miles to get rid of remaining residue of the old stuff.

Thanks Doc Z.

P.S. the additive stinks like a sewer.

Also I notice my 915 took only about 3.25 quart, maybe a bit more since I add 6 ounces of the LSD additive. Is this normal?

That stuff is awful! I use double latex gloves when I put the stuff in a trans...

Actually, that's just about right. Porsche quotes a "fill" at approx 3 liters. One liter is about 1.06 quart, so 3 liters = 3.18 quarts.

Good job!

What brand LSD and how much do you put in??

Thanks.

Pete,

One other question - I have to use ramps to do my work under my car - any issues filling the gearbox with a small nose down angle??
