1971 S clutch install
I can't figure out how to get the arm for the release bearing in with trans mounted. What am I missing? I took it off by taking the 9 cap screws out that hold the pressure plate on. I hope this isn't the way it has to back on!

Look thru the hole on the tranny, position the arm behind the release bearing, turn the release bearing until the arm slides over the bearing, then turn back so the 2 ears on the release bearing are lined up on the fork. I hope you replaced the ball socket under the arm while you were there,or you will be taking it out again.
Howard P.S. torque the 9 clutch bolts to 18 ft/lbs.

I don't remember being able to reach the ball socket while trans was installed on my '71 targa
if i didn't know better I'd say the fork needs to be installed before bolting trans to engine. '70 and '71 were push clutches as I recall so cable sheathing accuates fork...Bert

The clutch doesn't use a ball socket. The fork bolts to the trans, a special bolt with a built in ball socket.

That special bolt is called the ball socket.

The procedure I gave you is correct. I have been a Porsche Tech for 35 years & have done many, but haven't seen a 70 or 71, which both had this set up in years.

On 70 and 71 the pull clutch uses a throwout bearing that is fixed to the diaphragm spring. To remove it involves rotating the bearing 90 degrees so that it disengages (it has two protrustions as I understand) from the throwout bearing actuating arm.
