Flag mirror problem
My driver's mirror on my 86 Carrera doesn't seem to want to work. When I toggle the door switch I can hear it clicking inside the mirror but it won't move. The Bentley manual only shows how to take apart an 87 mirror and the 86 is different. Any ideas why it won't move? Does anyone know how to take it apart (without breaking it)?

check on repairing an earlier mirror, I think the 86 mirror is just a flag mirror that has been around for a while ....

Search on previous posts.
You can take the mirror out from where it sits. Held in by clips but that is what I remember - it's not what I am telling you to do before reading to confirm Once the mirror is out, access to the rest is pretty easy. Check the toggle switch, my negative ground came loose. It was clicking but not moving the mirrors. Once I cleaned the terminal and squeezed the contact, no more issues.

Quick question from someone with limited mechanical abilities.
On my 1980 SC, both mirrors work fine when moving up and down but neither work side to side. PO had advised that the contacts needed to be cleaned up. My question - are the contacts in the mirror switch or in the mirror itself. Thanks jb |

As per the Bentley, the contacts are in two locations. 1. The power mirror switch mounted on the driver's door trim. 2. The mirror change over switch mounted on the dash. Not sure if the power mirror switch can be flushed out with contact cleaner. Also, as per the previous post, check the connections at the door mounted switch. Good luck, Gerry |
IF your flag mirror is the kind that is held in with 4 clips at the corners, then you can sort of pry or pull it out. I use a plastic spatula to support the glass while I pry it loose.

Thanks for the replies. As an update, I just finished rebuilding my front calipers, installed new rotors, new pads, new brake hoses and hard lines and then I tried my mirror... and it miraculously works now. Bizarre. I didn't even so much as bump the mirror during all the brake work and now the mirror functions again. Just wish I knew why.
(I think the mirror just felt sorry for me from watching my futile two day attempt to extricate my last piston from the caliper. At one point there was a brief contemplation of semtex but fortunately for me and the neighbours Home Depot was all out of it) |
