Question Throw out shaft seal placement?

I have a '78 RoW 911SC. I have purchased three (per our host) seals for the throw out shaft. However, all the resources I have show only one. Assuming there should be three (there were none when I disassembled it) where should the go?

My best guess is one between the top of the lever and the bottom of the transmission, another below the throw out fork and the third above the fork?

Or should theree be one between the long lever and the short lever?

Send a message via AIM to vash
if i remember correctly. there is one on either side of the big clutch arm, and one on the bottom of the TO fork.

That would make sense. Anyone else have a thought?

Well, my 74-77 parts manual only shows one, just as yours does. My manual shows all four styles of bottom lever systems in one diagram, but otherwise is the same.

Something gave me the idea that you wanted one on each side of the throwout fork. I think I found I could install one below it, but not one above it, with a mag case 915. When I swapped its innards over into an aluminum case I don't think I rethought the matter.

I see that the diagram in the paperback Parts and Tech Ref Catalog 74-89 has the diagram you showed. And it lists 1 seal for '74-77, and 3 for 78-88. Maybe the aluminum cases are a bit different? The release forks are the same.

Thanks Walt. I think Vash has got the right idea. Unless someone else chimes in differently, I'll follw his recommendation.

Extra seals....

Glenn,

I had similar question when I had my transmission work done. Got extra seals from our host and decided to use 2 seals. Could have installed all 3 but opted to use 1 extra seal. One or 2 seals won't make any significant difference in my humble opinion.

Porsche Crest

While crawling around under my car I saw where I put two of these seals. Like most all SCs I have the two piece harp spring clutch arm. The big piece pivots around the shaft, and I have one seal atop the big piece, and one below between it and the small splined arm. Keeps the crud out of the pivoting and from getting up into the shaft in the tranny.

The factory manual shows the third atop the fork. Maybe mine is there - my recollection was that one position worked and the other made for too tight a fit.

Anyway, factory manual to the rescue.

So: no harp spring, 1. Harp spring, 3. My instincts tell me the one inside is not particularly important, though.

Just to confirm, there is one seal on the fork, and it goes on top? Pic shows top of transmission on the left side of the photo. Doesn't look like the fit is right....

Baby, just for future reference, if John Walker says it, it is pretty much gospel.
