Oil pressure switch issue

Here is the old switch (close to the vacum hose and the thermostat on top of engine). Only the connector in the red circle is connected.




Here is the new switch, this is original switch for 2.7L:


Question: Why is the old switch looking so different?

Because someone put the wrong sender in. The first picture is incorrect AFAIK.

The other sender is a dual sender to allow you have both an oil guage and an idiot light. This one is used a lot by the 356/912 crowd with a 911 combo guage.

The CIS 2.7s have the low profile ‘low oil pressure warning light switch’ mounted near the breather and thermostat.
This is due to the low clearance of the CIS to the top of the engine.
The taller ‘oil pressure sender’ was moved to the right side cam oil line fitting at the crankcase, near the engine number and type number.

The 2-terminal sending unit combines both the oil pressure sender and the low oil pressure warning light switch function in a single housing.
This is an aftermarket VDO part. I don’t think Porsche used one in a production 911.

In the first image above, the engine must have been converted to carburetors.
I don’t think that sender will fit under the CIS. If it can fit, it would be very difficult to service without removing the CIS.

The second image is of the red ‘late’ low oil pressure warning light switch. Porsche dealers were besieged with complaints of oil lights flashing at idle. These engines used the earlier version of the switch. Porsche’s response was to lower the pressure where the switch operates and turns the warning light on.

What are the pressure numbers on your switch?


For racing, Porsche has a type 771 adjustable switch. I have mine set to about 40 psi. The warning light comes on below about 5000 rpm with 210F oil. That is just right for an engine that never goes below about 7000 during the heat of competition.

Thank you for answers, and yes, the engine has WEBER carbs that makes this sender fit below it. I have in fact as you said, a working oil pressure sender to the right side cam oil line fitting at the crankcase, near the engine number and type number.

I will exchange the wrong switch with the new low profile then

I think my new replacement (911-606-230-00-M85) already had a little metal gasket (crush washer?) on the threads - looked more like a washer. Does yours have anything?
