Cool Phoenix risen from the ashes

Ahhhhhh, that's what a 2.4 P-motor should sound like!

I thought I'd just drop in a quick update on Phoenix post engine fire. You may remember that she caught fire, IMHO due to a very, very poor Motormeister rebuild. (MM ahs NOT heard the last from me....by far!!! Beside the way out of tune Solexes, the p's & c's where way out of tollerances and slapping against each other like mad. I'm having them measured.)

I picked her up from Performance Plus on Sat. am who put in new Mahle 2.4 p&c's as well as installed brand spanking new PMO's. How does she run? Well, we all tend to describe p-engines as jewelry, well, even that does not come close to how she purrrrs. If you couldn't see the fan and belts turning, you'd never know she was running. And man what POWER! Perf. Plus estimates somewhere between 200-210 hp. Torque is pretty up there as well as she accelerates like a bat out of hell. There is nothing like a well tuned 2.4!!!!

I'll post some pics as soon as I take a few. I had the camera with me this weekend but was far too caught up in finally driving her to stop for photo opps. ;-)

One tech question (back to what this board is all about.) With new PMO's installed, we'll end up doing a bit or experimentation/ trial and error with the jetting. Right now she idles smoothly when warm (pops a bit when cold) but she does tend to bog down a bit when accelerating from a dead stop. Say at a light pulling away. You have to sometimes really increase the rpms and slip the clutch in to get smooth start. Any ideas?

Also, I'm looking to install a fire extinguisher in front of the rear seats on the hump. I have a nice chrome Halo extingusher that just fits perfectly there. ? If I simple use sheet metal screws through the carpeting into the floorboards, will I actually break through to underside of the car or is there something between the floorboard and say the the top of the transmission? Is this solution too simplistic?

Good for you,Sounds like getting your car running will ease the MM pain. Which 2.4 p/c's did you install, T, E, or S?

Get some pics up here, well get to it!

I have a 2.4 that suffered an engine fire, but my solution is a bit different than yours. Installing a 3.2!

The flat areas of the floor pan are just that. A screw there will be poking out under the car. The center tunnel is enclosed, just use short screws so you dont bump into your shift linkage or wire bundle thats hiding in there.

Thanks guys. I'll try and take a few pics of the new motor tonight if it's not too dark. The weather here has been unseasonably mild and I plan to enjoy every day/ evening I can.

724doorE. I have Mahle 2.4 T's and am running "L" cams. It makes for a nice smooth running motor with great passing power.
(By the way, just curious, a '72 4 door E??

enlarging the idle jets helps the bog problem. see what you have first and go up to the next size. .60mm would be the largest you need. the timing should be set at full advance of 35° for starters. if it pings, retard a couple of degrees. more advance, less bog, to a point.

Congratulations. I can only imagine your joy.

FWIW, track rules often prohibit fire extinguishers that are attached with just sheet metal screws. Instead, they require a bolt and nut. Be careful of wires hiding in the tunnel if you drill there.

Superman. "Joy" doesn't begin to describe it! My girlfriend is starting to feel a bit neglected

Thanks for the track regulation tip. Any FE location tips? Someplace easy to get too. I don't care if it's visible or not. I picked up a nice chrome one just in case.

I haven't taken it to the track yet but plan a few Autocrosses and perhaps a DE this comining season. I'd really love to see what the car has in it and more importantly, what I have in me.

Like Superman said, track regs don't allow fastening with sheet metal screws. Our region at least, doesn't allow bolting the the tranmission cover on the hump. That cover is just fastened down with sheet metal screws.
You can make a fire extinguisher bracket from 1/8" (?) aluminum stock and fasten the ends under the seat rails or buy one. Currently I have the extinguisher in my 911 bolted to the vertical surface in front of the rear passenger side seat. I can reach it from the driver's seat and it doesn't effect the seat movement the way the bracket did.
I suggest a 2 strap bracket/holder if you haven't already got one. The single strap style that the extinguisher comes with can be less than secure. OG Racing sells them if Pelican doesn't have them.

72 4doorE--drivers, passenger, fuel, oil, you got a three door!(no oil)

I'm mostly stock except the 2.7 p/c's. L cams are nice, same as E or real close if I'm not mistaken.

So Otto, for that 2.5...66mm S crank and rods, 2.7 RS p/c's 2.7 heads (46mm in-40mm out) ports to 41mm, 906 cams, mfi port matched to heads and with recalibrated pump.

Put it in a 66 shell 1800lbs with a 901 5spd with close ratio gears in it.

out of curiosity, The factory claimed 270-275 hp for their 2.5- short and long stroke. Are they being wishfull, or just more trick?
