Question Final Drive Shaft Seals

OUTPUT SHAFT SEALS for GEAR BOX
Getting ready to install them. Should they be installed flush with differential case ? Or seated in against the bearing ?

TIA

Hello

I normaly press them flush however if the propel shaft is allready grooved then go a step deeper and the lip will run on better conditions.

BTW did you cheked the bearings ? To much play will let down your new seals sonner or later. The play is normaly 0.05 and 0,15 is the limit. Normaly you need the toolset VW 385 but if you messure direct on the shaft close where the sealring sits you get similar readings. Only on the passenger side is enough space to do that.

You also can make a visible inspection from the bearing by removing the side cover ( sealed with a rubber O ring, tourque spec 25 NM )

Grüsse
