I Need Help with Paint Codes. STUMPED

I'm hoping someone can help me with a question I have regarding paint codes. I have a 1984 911 Targa. The car is in super shape with only a few small minor chips in the paint in the front. I recently purchased the car and the owner referred to the color of the car as Zermatt Silver. The paint code for this is L Y7Y. In doing some research this looks like the correct paint and code for this car.

So I went ahead and ordered some Dr. Color Chip. While waiting for the product to arrive I was doing some research and I looked under the hood of the car. The paint code under the hood of the car is L 956?

Did I make a mistake ordering Dr. Color Chip with the wrong paint code? I looked online to see the break out of the paint codes by year and I can't find L 956 as a code for 1984. I can only find the L Y7Y Zermatt Silver.

Can anyone give me more information on this? I don't want to apply this Zermatt Silver if it's not the right color. Is there somewhere else I should be looking for the color code? Is there a name for L 956 Paint and is that a Silver Color?

Confused and feeling idiotic for not doing more research before ordering this touch up kit.

Any help would be appreciated. Have a Happy New Year

Justin

Since it's already ordered....spray a sample and let it dry, compare the color.

If it isn't a match, find a paint chip in an area that doesn't show and send it in for a color match.

L956 is Silver Metallic Clearcoat.

Try PaintScratch Touch Up Paint, Spray Cans, Paint Pen and see if they have L956 for 1984, otherwise I bet you can order the 1983 color and be just fine.

Occasionally these touch up paint companies will get it wrong, too, so keep that in mind. My first batch of L956 from paintscratch was WAAAAAY off, and they are good about doing it over for you if indeed they did mess it up.

My car has colour code 956 and it is called Zinn Metallic.

I have seen it called Zinc Metallic or Pewter and yes, it is part of the "Silver" family.

Cheers,

Geoff.

Geoff is right, at least according to Patrick Paternie's "911 Red Book."

956 is Zinc Metallic.
