early carrera coole question

Hmmmm... just thought of something.
I bought a carrera cooler from an '85 911.
I know these didn't have fans. But do the coolers themselves have a hole to put a thermoswitch into if I wanted to add a fan?

Or was that an addition that was made to the later coolers?
I'm just trying to round up the parts I'll need for this sucker when I get home.
Thank GOD for Pelican Parts "Project list"!

So handy!

Not much help but ,,,,,,,,,,,
The parts book only calls out one oil cooler from 84 - 89.
And 84 - 86 require a plug and gasket for the sender.
So the question is, is this supercedeing part ?

What year did the oil cooler come out of ?

My shop manual is updated. The oil cooler section has 1987 pages. So thats no help.

Maybe someone with and 84-86 Carrera will go out and look at there's. But being the leader of the SCWDP might make it tough.

Have A Great Day !!!!

Leland,

I'm thinking that the 85 cooler doesn't have a provision for installing the sender.

From PET:

85 cooler part# 930 207 053 00. The diagram shows a sending unit and seal ring above the cooler. When you click on the part in the diagram for the sender, the program gives you a !part# not found! message.

87 cooler part# 930 207 053 02. In the 87 diagram there's a note on the list under the oil cooler part# that says for cars not equipped with M176 (blower for oil cooler), use a screw part#.... and seal ring part#.... Which I assume is used to plug the hole provided in the 87-up cooler.

Sorry.

Hope this is understandable.

Gotta get this PET thing. It's quite handy- for ANY Porsche model, not just 911.

Theres your answer.
.00 was the part.
.02 is now the part.
So it still depends on what year car it came out of.

Sorry, should have used my PET. But hate jacking my screen around. When I have the book for the big stuff.

Take Care !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Country Boy, you don't need a fan.
The cooling switch is under your right foot.

Leland, you might want to consider using a manually switched fan rather than an oil temp switch. My fan on the Carerra cooler is manually switched - I like it better beause I can anticipate the hot temps coming on (summer at the track or heading into rush hour traffic on the beltway) and flip the fan on early before the temps begin to climb.
-
Besides, I like having the control and flexability of a manually switched fan. Same reason I dumped the auto climate contols and installed the old twin lever heater controls. Now I can pump all the hot air to passenger side and leave the driver's side with moderate air and cool feet!

The real-deal soultion here is to use the Hayden RV fan relay kit available at any FLAPS. The relay is triggered by temp (I think 210), along with an override switch. I mounted the override switch in the dash where the rear wiper switch would be. I can drive normally, and let the sensor kick the fan on when it thinks it needs it, or I can turn the fan on by hand (ie track or autocross)

Don't know about whether there is a provision for a theromstat, but from what I've heard the OEM thermostat turns the fan at too high of temp. I have heard the way to go is using a BMW compatable thermostat if you wish the fan to opperate automatically. Maybe someone can post that part number.

Me, as a member of the SCWDP brotherhood, intalled the Carrera front oil cooler last weekend. I did not install the fan b/c I want to see what improvements are made without one first. I did relocate the horn by fab'ing a braket if I need to later.

If I do go for a fan, I will go with the manual version. Since I removed the driving/fog lights for brake ducting, I will use the OEM switch.

Wayne book is a good reference for the job, the only part that is complicated is getting the hoses connected. You will know what I mean when the time arises.

By the way, mine had a thermostat but I don't know what year it came off off.

Leland, my '79 (very good year ) has a carreara, geeez I can never spell that word - why can't they all be SC's. Anyway, one of those oil coolers but without the fan and even when I'm driving like an absolute lunatic the temp gauge never gets above horizontal.

unless i'm missing something, look on the side of the cooler that would face the front of the car. if you see 2 threaded holes (1 small, 1 large), then you're able to install a thermostat. 1 of the holes is for the thermostat itself, and the other is for a ground wire for the fan.

in my case, although i wasn't planning to install a fan (no room due to battery box), i installed the thermostat and wiring and plumbed it through to the trunk.

there ARE a few options on the thermostats. the standard porsche one opens at a rather high temperature (240 degrees, if memory serves me correctly). Pelican lists a BMW thermostat that opens at a much lower temperature (190 degrees, if memory serves me correctly). the BMW thermostat requires 2 wires coming off of it while the porsche thermostat only requires 1 lead.

i seem to recall reading something in Pano once in which porsche testing indicated that the cooler fans cooled more effectively if they were activated at 240 degrees versus blowing continuously at a lower temperature.

as some folks have already mentioned, another option is to forgo the thermostat and wire in a manually switch which the driver activates based upon his desires.

tmctguer, Thanks again for the brackets and bushings I picked up from you a couple weeks ago. The project went without a hitch. When are you going to post some pics of that Concourse Speedster?

Wow, thanks for the responses!
The reason i ask is because i haven't actually seen this cooler yet. It is off an '85. So I guess there is no hole for a factory thermo.
I was looking at the semi compatable BMW thermos Pelican sells. I believe it was set for 91 deg C.
Well I've thought about wiring a manual switch. Guess there are pros and cons of each.
Thanks for the info though!!!
