Collapsible Oil Return Tube Installation - Should the snap ring be closer?

Putting everything back together on this "project" engine and notice that with the return tubes fully extended into the head and case, there is about a 1/4" gap between the snap ring and inner tube half. This seems to be ok because the snap ring is really only there to prevent the tube from collapsing too far and falling out.

I can push the tube together and it's still well in place. Any thoughts?

Use the factory collapsable tubes and you don't have to worry about such weirdness.

The factory tubes don't cost very much. There's no reason to not use them.

Thanks James.

The billet tubes came with the engine so I decided to try them out. I want to run the engine to see what I have, then go from there. I'll go back to the one piece design when I rebuild.
