little help with idle
I just performed major maintenance on my 84 and need a little guidance.. here is a list of what I did.
removed entire CIS system valve adjustment new plugs (standard copper plugs from our host)old plugs where platnium new clewett plug wires new oil pressure switch new thermastat o-ring new breather cover gasket new dist. cap and rotor replaced every oil seal except main seal new fuel filter reinstalled CIS and resealed with 12 new gaskets and six new spacers when I first started car it ran real bad would barley idle, figured i had vacuum leak found that intake studs where loose, retightned all 12 intake nuts and that solved vacuum leak here is my concern now when I start car cold it hunts for bout 5 min then settles to bout 700 rpm, I think this idle is too low before all this work was done it idled at bout 900 and sounded much better..I also think it is running rich now, I can smell it bad does the mixture need to be adjusted? i did not mess with that at all could some of the new parts I installed changed settings? The main reason I did all this work is because I bought car in June and dont have service records so wanted to start off clean plus the oil leaks where driving me crazy and I also wanted to take it apart to get experience with my engine TIA ffor any input |
Can you take a picture or clarify?
84 does not have CIS. 84 is the first year of Motronic. So . . . . . . . |
My bad it is motronic (thought CIS was cold air intake)
This is what I meant I removed the intake manifold systemhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1294026354.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1294026386.jpg |

Nice car, and nice job sprucing things up like that!
The low idle could be a vac leak (since you were in there). I'd double check the lines for connections/breaks, and the rubber connecting the two intakes together. Check the idle position switch response and the CHT. I would not adjust the idle at this point. |
Thanx for comment on car....I willdouble check for vac leaks....can u explain idle switch and cht check?
|
was just messin around in the engine and sprayed some carb cleaner around breather cover and the idle raised so I will take air box off again to gain access to those bolts...will this small vac leak cause rich mixture condition?
|
Torque them... carb cleaner is your friend.....

The cht or cylinder head temp sensor is connected to the bracket on the left of the intake. I thought that you may have disturbed this during intake R&R, and poss. caused an altered idle. If you have a Bentley manual, nicer than haynes or chilton, it helps you troubleshoot it. |

thanx Steely...i did find small leak round breather cover so i will take off air filter box tomorrow and tighten those nuts and c what happens...I appreciate your input...I had so much fun taking off intake and getting so experience on how this thing works...what part of SE PA are you I live bout 25 min from york and drive to lancaster on regular basis

I hope that's it (breather) for you. And yeah, I agree with you on the top - I wished I'd cleaned the bay as well as I did the top, so I might have to do a modified version of it so I can get back in there. was a good feeling. I'm east of you in horsham, and travel back/forth King of Prussia.
