Went for a ride up to the mountains via the San Joaquin Valley during the recent heat wave. My oil temp gauge was approaching 250F. 1972T targa w/ MFI with stock oil cooler. What is the maximum oil temp this car should run with? Is there any danger of permanent damage running at this temp. and does the elevation change effect this oil temp reading and the ability of the cooler to cool the oil.

250 is too hot for an early engine, plain and simple. Even if you're running synthetic oil, the earlier seals are not made for that kind of heat.
Then again, you're trusting a 29-year-old temperature gauge. I noticed that with mine grounding problems produced consistent readings on the gauge that were 20-25 degrees hotter than the engine actually was. With my car, turning the car off and then turning the switch to provide power to the gauge again would give me (breifly) an accurate reading. You might want to borrow a pyrometer to verify those temperatures, and you might also want to fabricate a shroud and some ducting to move more air over your cooler. ------------------ Jack Olsen My Rennlist home page • My Pelican Gallery page • My Porsche Owners Gallery page [This message has been edited by JackOlsen (edited 07-09-2001).] |

Radicalfil: I feel your pain. My '73 MFI "T" came without an external cooler and I saw 250 degrees at a recent DE event. I think the only way out of this problem is an upgraded external cooler.
