1974 Ignition Key

Can someone post a photo of an original ignition key for a '74 911? Thanks!

Trying to figure out if the 74 uses the same style key as an early 911. Does the plastic part of the key look like this? Thanks.

Red is the Valet key. Will start the car, and do the doors but not the trunk and glove box. I see a friction shift lever there.....Campy?

Campy? Good eye! I lightened it just a bit ....

I know the red is the valet but just need to know if the key style is the same. I don't think the key that came with my 74 is original.

The 914s came with those keys from 70-76. Dunno about the assdraggers of that time period.....

74 & 77 keys

The key on the left is for the 74 911S Euro and the key on the right is for my 77 3.0 Carrera Euro. they both have lights The smaller black key with my 77 key is the valet.
hope this helps

Thanks Steve, that's what I was thinking.

My key looks like 77 3.0 pictured. I suspect it is a replacement. Now I need to find some proper blanks.

The 74 key looks like the red one, only black The ones with the lights and crest can be cut to fit a '74, but they are not correct/original. They are for later models.

The lighted head and key blank is being sold for 60 bucks....head plus blank. The problem is finding the blank for the pre SC models. The blanks are 35 bucks alone.

928, 944. and 968 blanks using the same head are 9 bucks....go figure.

I cut down a black plastic headed key and modded the top with a Dremel. Got it to fit the lighted head.

your key is matching my 74 NOT the 77 3.0. the key for the 77 is larger than the 74 and the 74 key in the pic has the smaller key for the lug nut locks. sorry bout the confusion, I get my right and left backwards some times.

flinstone is correct. The black key similar to the red one pictured is the 'master key'; it works every lock on the car. The red key pictured is a 'valet key'; it works only the ignition & the doors, not the glove box or the trunk on targas.

Is it possible the key blanks used in Europe may be different from the spec US as far as being lit and the blanks used. Both of my keys are very old and are master keys having different groves than my red valet key. Oh by the way, the difference in the key blanks are the thicknesses allowing groves in the blanks for accessing all locks and compartments.

the key you have pictured looks like a valet key to me (even though it is black) not having the extra groves indicating a master key. At least this is how it was shown/explained to me from a master lock smith. I could be wrong.

There were only the two style keys for 74. The red and the black plain, unlighted ones. You can always go to the dealer and have a later lighted key with crest cut for your '74 as many have done...including myself, because it saves the original key and provides a light. The lighted, crested keys were unavailable in 74. Probably battery technology wasn't even there as even calculators were like bricks then.

Valet versus Master......umm, since NONE of us would likely trust a valet to park our rides, as long as the key works ALL the locks....who cares?

My valet key got the float test years ago....

I found a Key Blank on another site , was only 10 $ last year. Look around and you can find them fairly inexpensively. mine was identical to the original 74 carrera key that I had

Curt, for further clarification, my 75 has identical key blanks as my 71. Therefore, the 74 should be like an early car, not what you have.
