Ignition Wires

Fellow Pelicans,

I am going to replace my ignition wires - they are original. I see a couple of types offered on our hosts website. Any thoughts on what you guys have had success with. I am not a track guy (wish I could be $$$) - my 81 SC is a daily driver - my only car. So, I do not need crazy expensive track stuff.

Thanks.

Ray

On a stock car with CIS I would use the stock Beru stainless insulated wires. No reason to change. Some like Peter Z have said its extra insurance from the extra fuel vapor that can be present on a CIS car. Dont know about that, but they worked great for me until I upgraded to the MSD and dumped the CIS. Then I went Magnacore and they have been great as well...

I don't have any CIS experience, but I use the Clewett on my MFI & my Motronic cars. They are very high quality and less costly than most of the others. PP has them.

I loved the clewetts in my carrera do not like the magnacores i put in the turbo. they fit loose and the dust boots melted in about two weeks. If i know where to get all the parts to do it right I would rather just make my own.

I do not like Magnacores! Spark plug connectors too loose, even with pinching ends with needle nose. I have a 73 MFI and MSD.. Prior to Magnacores, I used MSD wires. The problem with them is no extender to fit down to the plugs. Had to remove valve cover if i wanted to do plug check. Now that the MFI is set, I'm going back to MSD wires.

First question..... why?

Do you have either
1.) moisture related poor running conditions ?....or.
2.) did you measure each wire resistance on a meter and find them defective?

If yes to either....then OK. Then, look also at 7mm , black Magnacors. Don't sell well because not "blingy" enough, though.

No real reason...

Thanks for all the advice - no, I have not measured each wire. I was doing it because I was told that I "should" because they are so old.

I am not a bling guy - I don't have the budget - or really the desire for that. Also, to me, the vintage look of the original stuff is the attraction. When I show up at the Porsche club breakfast I park next to 100K cars, I am the guy with the 14K daily driver. I like the look of the old wires - I guess you are right - if it ain't broke, don't fix it......

Thanks,
Ray

measure them; inspect the sheathing while bending the wires; spray water mist at night over the area while running the motor; inspect the connectors carefully

leave alone if OK

These last a surprisingly long time if the car is not driven a "normal" amount of miles each year (as I suspect will be less), and given proper care and storage ( garage kept, etc).....that's the reason I say "why"?.....'

In most other cars of daily drivers....sure, a wire set from 81 might be junk....but it may be fine for you. Better to simply check.

Thumbs up Clewetts

The new Clewetts are great, excellent fit easy install, and custom sets are just a couple skittles more than stock.

I have Clewetts and Magnacores, I think both have their good points. The magnacores are much more pliable and easier to clean. The Clewetts are a little cheaper and fit a little better, but the braided sheathing can rip, and it is a little harder to clean.

The braided oem wires are fine too, for sure. I just like the (only slightly) cleaner look of the non-braided wires.

Follow Randy's advice (Rwebb). If you dont need to, leave them alone. I needed to and went with the Clewett, there was a more significant cost difference between the Magnacores and Clewetts when I changed them out. Very happy with them after 2 years and about 7K miles.
