82 SC, what should I do?
Here's a fun question:
It's 1 degree out right now. My '82 SC won't leave the garage for 3 months, at least. It's sitting on jack stands to protect from flat spots. It runs good, needs only a few minor repairs to be done over the winter (seat belt, hood shocks, etc.). The car has about 55k on it an its almost completely stock. It's had some engine dressing done, the air pump removed, tensioner collars installed, and some beautiful sounding exhaust installed. The suspension is stock and it has a brand new set of Star Spec. Z1s. If you had this car, a nice warm garage, some spare time and let's say $500, what would you do? ~Max

Buy a battery tender;
Put some fuel stabilizer in the tank and run the motor for 5 minutes, Then put $450 in the bank and laugh your ass off!

Air pump on an 82? I thought they were discontinued after 1980...?

The EUROs had the air pumps.
Can I have any suspension fun for that kind of money?

I'd buy (rent?) a reasonable, usable trailer, a cover, and drive twice a month anywhere south where it's nice, unload, and drive like Hell. Then go back home. Then repeat. That's six great weekends or more.
Have to edit! My Wife just told me, "Send it us! We'll take care of it....." ![]() Last edited by nesslar; 01-08-2011 at 06:07 PM.. |

I like the trip idea...
The front right factory Bilstein decompresses when it's in the air. Seems to drive okay though. I'm thinking about putting in a new set of Bilsteins and a brace bar. But after a trip over to the Elephant Racing, I somehow feel I need to spend $4k on a suspension upgrade.

Fabspeed cat by-pass. Absolutely best bang for the buck mod I have found in 30+ years of Porsche ownership.

Wevo shifter lawn chair, and beer to spend many long hours admiring an unmolested SC...and fix the shock.

I change my answer to Wevo.
I could also change it to "930S wheel." I love mine.

I'm already Cat free, and o2 sensor free...
Will the Wevo cause me to shift the 915 faster than it should be?

Take 300 lbs out of the car and will seem like a new ride when you drive it in the spring

Why?... Ive had my 82SC for over 12yrs, it sits every winter like yours, and Ive never had a flat spot(currently running Kumo MXs). As far as fuel stabilizer... you don't need it. The gas will not break down in 3 months. The battery tender is a good idea however and it will extend the life of your battery. Buy one and keep the $470 for the higher summer fuel costs.

If the car is sound and you haven't had it very long, I would spend the winter cleaning the hell out of the car and make a wish list. You should drive the car for a season so you can figure out how you want to use the car. A well maintained Porsche with only 55,000 miles should be a great driver with few parts needing to be replaced.
I know how it goes though, it just feels so good to start wrenching, buying shinny parts and hanging out in the man cave ![]()
