The horn button came from a 68 912. The 68 911/912 steering wheel is bigger in diameter than the 914 wheel.

In this picture, a 914 wheel is on the left, and a 68 912 wheel is on the right.

Clay,

Do you know if the optional leather wheel for the 914/6 was simply the hard rubber standard wheel with a piece of leather sewn on, or did they start with a different part altogether? Have you seen a factory wheel with two layers of leather? The rim on yours looks a little thicker than what I am used to seeing.

Thanks,

Jeff

The leather wheel is a standard wheel with the leather sewn over it.

No extra padding at all, just some thick leather.

Clay,

Could you tell me the part # of your wheel? It probably ends with 806.10, but it maybe an 805.XX part. Thanks.

Jeff,

The thick grip 914 GT wheel (early RSR also) is 380 mm with a hard plastic center and several layers of some sort of felt or thin foam with leather over it.

i have an 806.10 -6 wheel, i got the leather kit from AGLA to redo the wheel ala rsr. the kit for the rsr wheel comes with a felt pad that you glue on to get the thickness and then wrap in leather. if i ever get around to stiching it up, i'll post some pics.

AGLA is in south fl. i went down and picked the kit up, alan gun is the owner and was a very accommodating.

bob, here are some results form a search for "914-6 steering wheel", some pics in there some where.

Bob-
This is a "single wrap" over a hard rubber 380mm wheel. I did the work myself after ordering (and waiting 2 months) an AGLA kit that didn't fit.

Thanks for the info and pics everyone. The 914-6 wheel I purchased yesterday has the hard foam which, based on the above info, I will want have felt/leather wrapped for the RSR look. Actually both look really good. Just curious how difficult it would be to do the felt/leather wrap. I understand the AGLA price for this is higher than expected.

bob,

i'm looking at my kit now, i don't think it would be that much harder to do the felt, but what do i know!! when i went to AGLA to pick up my kit, alan envited me into his shop, and i talked to him and his employees. the padded wheels weren't their favorite wheels to do, so there must be more to it than i realize. they told me you have to tape the felt in place and then glue it on a little at a time (3M spray adhesive) and work your way around the wheel. the leather in the kit already has the stitch holes in it, so you just follow the holes.

Jeff,

The leather wrapped wheel for the 914-6 starts with a wheel that has a soft rubber base. Not the hard rubber wheel.

The same goes for the 911 400mm leather wrapped wheel.

The 914-6GT, RSR wheels evidently started with the hard rubber wheel and the diameter was built up with felt and a single leather wrap. At least that is what I've heard two people who have had these wheels apart say.

Cheers,

My brother lived in Melbourne for 20 years. I've been to Indialantic quite a few times. Isn't Billy Lane from down there?
Sorry for the highjack!

Since I started "actively looking and listening", I have seen some nice examples and heard a few stories. Started to get some price quotes and sources. Thanks to everyone for the info.
If anyone has the plain hron button to sell please let me know.

One more question: Spokes painted flat, gloss, semi-gloss or satin? The paint on the wheel I bought is in really nice condition and original. It appears to be either semi-gloss or gloss.

Bob-
Semi-gloss has been on all of the wheels I've seen. I refinished mine with such a paint (see above).
