Appraise my car!

Hey people...

I've been thinking about what I could get out of my 911 "project" if I ever sell it, and since early 911 prices can be neurotic, I thought this board would be a good place to go to see if I can get many price statements from all kinds of people, because I really don't know what price the car would bring! So be fair: Here it is.

Description: 1967 Porsche 911 Coupe. White exterior / black leather interior. 135,000 miles. Early air conditioning unit. 5-Speed transmission. This is a rust free 911! The car was restored close to ten years ago, and recently underwent some more small-scale restoration tweaking. This included dropping the engine, doing a valve job, compression check, electronic sorting, cleaning the (stainless steel) heat exchangers, and hose replacements. Around the time of the restoration (don't know if it was before, or after,) the car was appraised by a Porsche dealership at $6,700.

The interior is great! It is re-done leather, and there are only small tears in the leather around the seat adjustments. The carpets in the rear are in good condition. Mainly the only thing missing is the driver's side (rubber) floormat, but a temporary wool floormat is being used. Other than that, the horn cover is missing for the wood steering wheel, and there are screws missing here-and there that could be replaced. The slim under-dash A/C console is a bit beat up, and could possibly use a new face-plate for looks. The trunk is missing the carpeting, but is otherwise is fine. The original owners manual is still with the car.

The engine is running strong, and sounds mean, just like every 911 should, and as said above, just had a valve job. The car has the original engine. There are various new electrical parts for the engine, such as a new distributor cap, ignition wires, spark plugs, fuel pump, and so forth. Has original Weber carburetors. The engine leaks oil, but I believe the only reason for it is a bad gasket that could easily be replaced in the oil pan. When it leaks, the oil drips on to the heat exchangers, causing the car to smoke.

The suspension needs work. The rear sags and the front end rides too high. It just looks like some careless person adjusted the heights wrong. New polyurethene suspension bushings were purchased, along with pre-lube, but they have not been replaced yet.

The body, as said above is rust free, and painted white. Whoever put this car back together after the original restoration was quite careless, however. Neither doors, decklid, or trunklid hang perfectly right, and the left front fender looks like it's sitting at an angle. There is a trim piece missing, as well as the gold "911" badge on the decklid, but all lenses are good. The paint is very bad on this car, and it could use a good repaint. It looks like someone did it in their garage on the weekend and wasn't too careful, or were enjoying the pleasures of an alcoholic beverage while they painted. The glass is all good. Other than that, there is small pitting in the (35 year old) chrome.

Overall the car has TONS of documented reciepts for matinence and parts, adding to over $4,000! A fairly complete piece of the car's history is in these reciepts. As stated above, the car still has the original owner's manual. When the car is in my hands, it is well taken care of, but still could use a little love.

So let's hear it!

I almost forgot!

Almost forgot to put in a link to photographs...

These are on my website:

http://www.angelfire.com/mi2/tylermerkel/911project.html

Also, if anyone did not know, the engine is a 2.0 liter aircooled flat-6 with 130 horsepower and 130 lb/ft of torque (the original 911 engine ) AND... the car has a brand new set of tires on the original 15X4 steel wheels. These new tires currently have LESS than 50 miles on them!

Don't look to BA's advice..

It appears to be a nice car. I would guess $8K would be a "home run" and $ 7500 would be a good price. If it doesn't need paint or rebuild is a plus, and have a recent "leak-down" from a local P mechanic. Good luck

In my inexpert opinion, I'd say $6,000 sounds about right, assuming there isn't hidden rust and it's a mostly original car. But bad paint, engine leaks, and the lack of a tranny rebuild could mean another 10K or so to bring the car up to good condition (and a value of 7K, according to the guide below), which would get a prospective owner upside down pretty quickly.

From the Ur911 site:

Resale Values: 1967 911
Trend: Up

Coupe

Poor $ 6192
Good $ 7040
Excellent $ 9425

Looks nice, but people aren't exactly beating down the door for a SWB 911. I personally wouldn't give you more than $5-6K for it.

130hp? My first 911 (about 8 years ago) was a 1967, and if memory serves it put out only 110hp. I think an S version was offered that year, but don't recall the hp increase. Of course, my memory is not exactly perfect : )

Does the engine match the chassis? If it's an S or even a more recent engine, I would think it would enhance the value of the car. The '67's had what I think Up-Fixin referred to as "metallurgical problems". As I found out first hand, this means that the pistons were prone to rather easy failure, mostly due to mis-gapped plugs or a lean condition. Mine was caused by a bad jet in the Webers, and resulted in a total teardown of the engine.

I sold mine after extensive rust restoration, engine and other work for $5,000 about 6 years ago. I think the going rate for a top notch original 1967 at the time was about $8,000. I personally have a weak spot for the early 911 body style, but cannot imagine the possibility of a "rust free" example, since the pre-73 cars, and especially the pre-69 cars, were called "throw away" cars for a reason.

Still, I would think you should be able to fetch somewhere right around $6,000 for the car. I would fix whatever the piddling engine leak is, and you'd probably get more. Actually, if the car is truly solid and "rust free", I'd keep it, since the early cars are harder and harder to find, and look great without all of the later trim; etc.

If you want to give it away for a song, maybe I can talk my wife into another car!

Okay, thank you to everyone who replyed. You've helped out a lot in pointing me in the right direction over this 911.

If anyone else has any other opinions, I'd be glad to hear.
