Cable broke

Good day
I'm a new Porsche owner, (1987 3.2) and while looking over the engine I noticed that a cable that runs from a cylinder shaped part over to the throttle body (?) had broken at the throttle body connection. Can anybody tell me what this does/or controls.

Thanks, Bob

That plastic housing tends to break over time and heat at the throttle body, if housing is still there you can use zip ties to rig it together and get your cruise control working.

At times it is nice to cruise on the highway/freeway and turn on the cruise control. my 2 cents

The cable is NLA. You can find a used one or there is a thread where someone made a new one from piano wire (you can use the Search button in the upper right hand side to find it).
In the meantime, welcome. Have you posted a pic of your new ride yet?

Thanks for the welcomes. Sorry it has taken so long to post again, for some reason could not get signed back in, fixed now I hope. Somewhat of a computer idiot, retired and old ya know.

Just had my 1987 911 for a couple of days before putting it up for the winter and headed south myself (FL.) Don't have any pictures yet except of the one's from the seller. Sure I'll be posting some as time goes. I have been reading/surfing this site (Pelican) since I acquired my car and what a great site, and the members are just great with all their knowledge and so willing to help.

Thanks, Robert

Looks great, how are you going to use her? I use my 85 Targa for all fun things, touring, auto-x and tooling around on nice days. I'm the second owner and judging by the mileage and condition it was when I bought it I think she's probably used harder, and more frequently in my care. Fun car, good luck and happy motoring.

It was me who fabricated a new cable from piano wire and a couple aluminum spacers from the hardware store. For a rundown on my cruise control issues, search on "Confused Cruise Control" and it should come up Bob. It's the same as mine though mine is red.

The cruise control has worked flawlessly though recently I have an intermittent speedometer which affects the speed input to the control module. It is not the cruise control system but is the speedometer, the wiring or possibly the sender in the transmission.

Um, no, that is the "loud pedal" and on long trips without the cruise control it can get me in trouble when I look down and realize I'm humming along at 90+ (since the car is rock solid at even higher speeds).

Word of caution, disconnect the cable if it's broken. It can pop out of the bracket and stick your throttle wide open... I found this out the hard way.

Thanks all,

I think it will mostly be used to "tool around town in" but back in the early 80's I did have a 911T that I auto-crossed a few times with the local sports car club here. What fun that was.

Thanks for that thread Roger, that's exactly where mine broke. Didn't look like it was cut, so hoping that the broken cable is all thats wrong.

Robert
