who's running an AFR gauge?
thinking I'll run an AFR gauge with the new engine. this one:
mostly because it's a decent quality and won't look too out-of-place in a '67. I might do two, one for each bank. or maybe I can figure out how to have two senders and switch the input to one gauge. anyone had any experience with an AFR gauge? thanks, Don. |
A search will turn up several threads on this topic.

Innovate
I have the Innovate and have been very happy ... Key to a good install is making sure grounds are adequate.
Regards, Dave |
I have that exact one on the '79 (3.0L w/Weber 46s) and it works great. Use it to dial in my A/F since I had to re-jet due to the carbs being tuned for 110 octane. However i'd recommend the digital version for at-a-glance visibility at speed. Still, the analog one works well.
I vaguely recall AEM makes a harness adapter that you can buy to join two O2 signals? Check out their website to confirm. They recommend these not be used for continual operation at very high EGT temps. So once mine's dialed in, i'll pull the wideband O2 out and plug the exhaust. Wideband O2 sensors are fairly expensive so I see no reason to kill it running WOT on the track all the time. I'll just put it back in on occasion for a periodic check. |
I also run an innovate system.
LC-1 wideband AFR with permanently mounted gauge and a DL-32 for datalogging of AFR, RPM, MAP, acceleration/braking g's, and cylinder head temp. http://asbury.smugmug.com/By-Land/My...89_YDd4t-L.jpg http://asbury.smugmug.com/By-Land/My...09_DJGg8-L.jpg Interfaces with my UMPC to form a "digital dashboard" http://asbury.smugmug.com/By-Land/My...99_Sbgqw-L.jpg |

I like the inovate. I have an adjustable wur so it is a must. Makes for easy tuning to. |

I had a custom gage built for the clock that interfaces with an LC-1. Have two O2 sensors (L&R) and a switch that can toggle between the two.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1295737569.jpg

Ive run a wideband 02 sensor in my cars for years for tuning . I cant imagine going back to guessing AFRs! I want to recommend an analog gauge . If you are trying to tune injection or carbs digitally
with poor drivability during quick throttle motion, it is very hard to tell what is happening when all the digital numbers are changing so rapidly. With the analog gauge the needle sweep tells you a very accurate story. |

EXACTLY what I need! even the switching. can you tell me where you got it, and about how much it was? thanks. |
I had the gage done by BigMark Design (bigmarkdesign@aol.com). I sent him my core and he provided the rest. I think it was about $200. Actually, I used an LC-1 that allows some programming to get the analog gage calibrated. I bought a vintage-looking switch from Radioshack and mounted it in a pre-existing hole in the dash under the speedo. I think this hole was there for a fog light switch.
It really has been a BIG help when trying to dial-in the Webers. Hope that helps. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1295740448.jpg |
I have been using a good AFR gauge on my 1973 2.7L MFI engine for more than a year. Did lots of research before I bought. In my opinion the Innovate is a 5+ year old design that is expensive and difficult to hook up. I went in a different direction and have been very happy.
My choice was the Daytona-Sensors WEGO IV. The major advantage is that it is a small all in one unit that has 2 hours of data logging. You download the data and look at the charts using the supplied software. Or you can download in an Excel spreadsheet and study the numbers on the spread sheet. In addition to AFR, you hook it up to the tach wire on the 911 so you can see RPM, AFR, and mine has a MAP sensor so I can see manifold vacuum. DATA LOGGING IS VERY IMPORTANT! I can't say enough about this. You do a good run, and study the data and make adjustments. Looking at the gauge while you drive is not the way to go. Trust me. You can get data logging on the Innovate and others, but it is usually a very expensive add-on. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1295741100.jpg This is the unit and the sensor. Kit comes complete with cable, bung, software and full instructions. They also make a double unit that looks like this: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1295741198.jpg This comes with 2 sensors and 2 readouts and data logging for both. Programming and downloading are done with a USB cable to a laptop. The single unit is a little over $400.00 USD and is sold by our hosts. I would seriously look at this unit. I am very happy with it. Very reliable, easy to install and data logging is a must.\ Here is the full kit contents. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1295741372.jpg |
By the way it is made in the USA in Daytona Florida. I noticed the USB cable in the kit has a made in China on the packaging. This is a USA made unit. check out the website Daytona Sensors LLC - Engine Controls and Instrumentation Systems for Automotive and Motorcycle Applications for more information and you can even download the software if you want to check it out.

Any info Cheers -Kav |
Yes, used a two position switch between two LC-1s and the gage. They shared a common ground snd the signal was switched.

Many points to consider,,
Ergonomics, (how easy is it to see, when you are testing - higher is better)
Compatibility, can i run it full time from the canbus on the megasquirt?? The MS has good data logging capability but will it run a gauge full time also?? How helpfull is dual sensor input/cost??? It seems that an analog gauge might be more user friendly than rapidly changing digital display, But?? Experience??? obviously, data logging makes this question moot. Cost to add to a MS EFI?? Lastly, appearance, does it look OE, like the slick clock replacement with volts/O2? Obviously, I'm not asking my wife, who subordinates function, ergonomics, cost, durability, repairability, compatibility and everything else to "How it looks" - sorry, slipped off my meds there for a moment. :-) chris |

Great thanks! I thinking of running 2 AEM 30-0310 wideband controllers, any thoughts on that? I've heard the LC-1 connectors can be temperamental? Cheers -Kav. |

This issue was discussed here earlier this year: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1045024-two-sensors-one-af-gauge.html Sherwood |
I have one from a Pelican member who installed the gauge in the tachomemter, replacing the boost gauge. I have a boost gauge in the clock position anyway. I think it was called "In your Face". It's a PLX gauge, I really like it
