The $50 Porsche Exhaust

I thought you guys might enjoy a look at my total outlaw, total rat-rod $50 / two hour exhaust "project". I never really meant to do this - I think I was just farting around in the garage and had one too many beers or something...

Anyway, by way of some background, this all started when I decided to modify my SSI's to open up some more exhaust options. Pretty simple stuff, all I did was cut the "S" pipes off at the collectors, moving the flange forward to the position used on most headers (I saved the "S" pipes and welded another flange onto them, so they can serve as the "street adapter" pipes sold for use with headers and street mufflers). The idea is to be able to run anything from my M&K sport muffler to megaphones to a Paragon Racing style center outlet "stinger" to a Rothsport style Magnaflow cross over system. I can run pretty much anything I want now.

Including this. The idea is simple enough - head to your local autoparts store and buy a pair of cherry bombs on sale for $20 apiece. Grab some scrap steel bits laying around the garage, cut the flanges off an old pair of "real" street adapter pipes, and fire up the welder. Two hours and several beers later, viola:

Sorry about the fuzzy picture, but it does show the general idea. Car is pretty well thrashed from some fire road bombing by way of a test run, but I did hose the new pipes off for a better shot. These things were bright red, and the kids wanted me to keep them that way, to make some sort of "statement" or something. I thought that would be a bit over the top. I wanted to keep it subtle...

It's kind of funny, but these are actually quieter at part throttle cruise than my M&K dual out sport muffler, and lots quieter than my old Leisritz. They really only get loud when you get on it and spin it up a bit. At WOT and 5,000 to 7,000 rpm, they are darn near megaphone loud.

The best thing about them is they come off in about five minutes. Don't even have to jack the car up to remove them and put the M&K back on it.

I think in the next week or two I'll get a small Magnaflow (ala Jack Olsen) , some exhaust pipe, and go to work on that. The idea is to have that wind up as my "every day" exhaust, with this glass pack setup and maybe some megaphones for those "special events".

Let's see......

My wife has different shoes for different occasions, why not different exhaust for different occasions?

I like it! But it does lead to one question-

Should the exhaust match the shoes?

I like my SSI/Triad West combo, but I need a few more options to store in the shoe closet.
Gotta keep up with the Higgins.

Good stuff, haycait. I have a pair of the M&K shorty track mufflers that I was going to use just for that purpose. I've been scrounging around for a set of donor megaphones with cookie cutters that I can sacrifice for the project. I love the look, but the noise is simply unacceptable on the street.

Which glasspacks are those? I was hoping to find a pair of Magnaflow glasspacks, but it turned out everything they list that was anywhere near small enough was out of stock everywhere I looked.
