MSD-Coil Question

Morning guys,

I've had my MSD Blaster 2 coil, on my I have an 82sc-targa with a 3.3turbo engine. since 1994. (UPSIDE DOWN POSITION.) Installed msd6al in 2009.

I noticed this year during the fall months temp-40's that my car felt not as potent as before. My boost was still at 1 bar. My afrs were good, took the plugs out and them cleaned up...chking all vacum lines, elcectric connections etc..etc..

In Dec./2010 The car had a hickup while driving 50mph-60mph-cruising. She was feeling less and less in power, but still showing 1 bar. Then car would start up nicely, one shot. Then let it warm up 7-10 min. Rpm would read 950. Then after the 7-10min warm up, iT would start hunting/rpm,fluctuating..
I took it for a run hwy- within 5-8mins driving 50mph-. Car died. Couldn't start it in gear. Came to a stop. Car tried to turn over..but no go.

Once, I got it home chked-fuel and spark...(cleaned distrib,chked rotor-(5 ohms/rotor/bosch)

My can see my MSD-COIL ever so slightly wet..

My ohmeter-reading on the primary shows 0.00 ohms (+ to - ) on the 20k and 200k setting. The secondary shows ( - to center & + to center ) 10.5-11 ohms.

I believe the primary should show at least 0.7 ohms or better.????
(Currently having the hall sensor-distrb. changed. (maintenance) Orig since 1982)
(Still cking for other things)

Is the MSD 8222 (EPOXY) a better alternative or something else???

Thxs

Walt

Walt,

If you mounted your MSD Blaster coil upside down, you did it no favors,...

The only MSD coils that can be reliably mounted that way are the High-Vibration Blaster or any of the E-core coils.

BTW, the Bosch distributor uses a magnetic pickup, not a Hall sensor, and they are VERY reliable. The green coaxial trigger cable, OTOH, does give trouble over time and I like to replace them before they cause problems.

Walt
I test them with my DVOM, wiggling and bending to confirm continuity and no shorts.

I know a lot of people mount the can coils 'upside down', like the factory coil, but like Steve says "you did it no favors". In the MSD literature somewhere it tells you not to mount the can coils upside down.. I use the MSD 8207 e-coil with no problems.. Your turbo might require a different coil.. Look in your MSD lit or on the MSD website.. If you're still in doubt call them..

I have used the MSD High Vibration coil, upside down, with no problems. They are epoxy filled instead of oil filled.

Thnxs guys

Spoke with MSD. Msd blaster 2-purchased in 1994.

The Rep. said my ohms should not read 0.00 on the primary & the secondary should not read 10.5-11.0 ohms...not good..
