Wasn't the first a push rod twin fan engine? or was that the prototype and never produced?

Replacement cases were not numbered (as far as I know).

It is 3080001.

It is indeed #1 … a 1968 911L RoW, not 1963-4.

Also... its owned buy a guy that does body repairs on 908's and other vintage racecars. He also has a Ferrari 512 racecar in his shop?? .. something like that. You never know who you might meet.

Question for Grady, so this is the 1st 911 engine of production year 1968?

Can we determine what engine type this is? (911/xx or 901/xx etc)


Because it's not 'the 1st' 911 engine '63/64 era, what is this engine's significance? Am I missing a more profound significance here? (Probably)

Good news. It is type 901/06, and an aluminum case version. I'd REALLY like to know the build # on this engine (found just behind the serial #); see the thread I posted earlier. There will also be casting dates on each half behind the pulley (count the dots around the year).

I guess the answer is it isn’t all that significant.
It is #1 for that model (type 901/06) engine but it may or may-not be #1 built for 1968 production.

This is where Pelican djpateman’s build list is so important.
The ‘build number’ just below the type number will help sort out the order in which the engines were actually built.

It may turn out that this is the first engine for ’68 production.
It is also possible that a 901/02 911S engine or a 901/14 USA engine proceeded the building of this engine.
I suppose even a 901/7/8/13/17 Sportomatic could be earlier.

The good news is that it is an aluminum case engine.
This will possibly make a nice core for a proper rebuild.

You can tell the interest in finding a very early engine.
Within an hour or so, this thread had over 1000 views and now approaching 2000.
Everyone should keep looking.
It would be wonderfully instructive to find a very early one unmolested.

Is this secondary number under the tin for the fan housing? And any other numbers ... the actual location. I should be able to have the owner get them to me.

Grady and other historians and knowledge-preservers, would this engine's chassis soulmate have had a correspondingly oddball serial number (VIN) with lots of zeros in it? And the transaxle, too, for that matter?

*3080001*.

Ahhh....quite obviously not 0000001 of anything.

Is it THAT MUCH of a stretch to see that the number starts with a ( *) star...so no new numbers can come before....and ends with a star for the same reason?. And what's this?.....the person originally reading the number kinda "forgets" the 308 in the front?.

This kinda stuff just torques me up.....

Will. We now know its not the first, but the first one of a particular year. I am quite clear that I didnt get to personally view this motor before my first post... and was just filling in anyone interested as soon as i found out the information as well. Its not really the three millionth one. It doesnt start with just #000001.

Only one of these engines will be the first built for the 1968 model year, and that will be determined by the build #.

New news.....
The Type #'s are 901-06. For what ever that means. If someone would like to translate. Trying to figure the build number. This is all new to me. Will advise.
