Tires: 225 vs. 245?

I'm currently running 245/40-18's on the front and am experiencing some rubbing. Would switching to a 225/40-18 help or am I opening a whole 'nuther can of worms (ride/handling)?

I believe the wheels are 8.5" wide.

I would think that going from a 16" wheel to an 18" wheel would have a bigger difference on ride/handling than moving from a 245 width to 225.

225s with normal sized rims is about the largest you can run. Not many people run 18s on an SC. Shocks, t-bars and other suspension bits like tire sidewall size were designed with 16s as a max wheel diameter. A 40 series tire is a rather harsh ride, heck 45s killed my back and I went back to 50s.

But I'm sure you know that......

How are you running 245 on the front of a SC?
I've got 225's with as much negative camber and rolled the fenders. Must be a tight fit

It's a small side wall but it will fit. You'll notice it's a but stiffer, and will feel more responsive but have less overall grip. What size in the rear?

So...is there anything suitable between 225 & 245 as a compromise? 225's sound like they'll be a little more harsh of a ride (which I already have...don't want to make it worse).

Where and how are they rubbing? ie, just turning? under heavy cornering forces? under bump compression?

Are there 235s available? Remember that a 245 by brand "X" might be wider than a 245 by brand "Y".

Can you trim away a lip on the fender if thats where the rub is?

I am suprised that a 245 rubs given your fender widths. Maybe a wheel with a different offset would work better?

A 225/40 may reduce rubbing due to being narrower but also ride more harshly (40% of 225 is less than 40% of 245).

I'll answer your questions in order:

Rubbing at the fender lip (outboard) and fenderwell (inboard) @ full lock (i.e. turning into parking space) and under compression (i.e. turning while hitting a dip in the road).

I ordered a set of Toyo Proxes RA1 for the rear and would like to run them in the front as well. The RA1's only come in 225 & 245.

I could trim some of the fender, but that would have to be done at a body shop.

Wheel of different offset = custom made (CCW's, etc.) = $3600.00.
