Best method for hibernating a fuel pump
I've got a spare Bosch fuel pump for a 3.2. What's the best way to keep it on a shelf for a year(s)?

factory sealed them in a plastic bag with some light oil and then they were put in their parts box.
I had a NOS 70 mfi pump that was good to go becasue it was still sealed in the bag with oil. Otherwise seals can dry out. I would get a good zip lock freezer bag and spray the pump down with a light silicone spray then put a small amount of light oil (like chain saw oil) in the bag and seal the pump inside and shake a bit to spread the oil and keep in a climate control environ like your basement or workshop.

my gut feeling is to run it dry, then oil and bag it. or pump some ATF thru it, then oil and bag it. I don't think you want the gas sitting in there. as always, my advice is worth exactly what it cost

I just assumed there was no gas as he said it was a spare. any gas would evaporate in a very short time. Main point here is to keep the seals from drying out. I suppose a couple of squirts of lube inside the pump will not hurt.

Try Fogging Oil
You might try spraying fogging oil into the pump before storage. It works for small engines, outboard motors, pressure washers, etc. You can also spray the inside of the storage bag with it.

Just an idea... Seal the pump in a glass container submerged in fresh gas.
If the glass container is truly sealed the gas wouldn't evaporate and the pump seals would be like new. Not practical in the real world. Do you want a glass jar full of gas sitting on a shelf in your work shop?

No gas is not a good storage vehicle. It will turn to varnish.

Something like and old coffee jar with a plastic cap then sealed with cling wrap and tape. Is there a liquid that has the properties of Gas that doesn't turn to varnish?

Excellent responses, thank you. Looks like I'll run it with ATF. Have a spare gallon of +4 on the shelf never used for a Jeep that I can run through it and then stop the pump, cap to seal and set it on a shelf.
