Length of steel braided oil line for front oil cooler?
Gents,
I am planning to install a front oil cooler behind my RS front bumper. I recently pruchased a RSR style oil cooler with AN-12 fittings welded on one side of the cooler. I have a 1980ish VGC thermostat. Question: I plan to buy 20 feet of AN-12 steel braided oil line. Is that enough , too much or little? The cost is $6.15 per/ft. Thanks -- Vr,

i am in the middle of the same project asnd plan on removing the trombone and running my lines tomorrrow. i plan on running them from the trombone connections to the cooler only. Why do you want to run all the way back to the thermo? I bought the 30mm/12an fittings from pegasus. Dont think youll need more than a few feet for each hose. ill let ya know how it goes and post some pics.

There (BAT) thinking you don't have a fender oil cooler, do you have one? If you do, than you only need a few feet of hose. They have the correct fittings for that.

If you must use -AN, which is pretty expensive (-16AN right angle swivels are like $40 each), use Aeroquip startlite. The braided hose is not only heavier, it will abrade everything it comes in contact with.
I highly recommend sourcing used NASCAR hoses, there's a chap named Page Lemon at Race City Race Parts who sells on eBay-- I used all used Startlite hoses in -16AN for my cooler, worked great at a fraction of the new price. If I had it to do over again I would use 30mm factory Cohline throughout. S/T style.

I get all my Aeroquip hose and fittings from Pelican Parts in WI. Have all the -12 and -16 fittings in stock, as well as the metric to AN adapters.

Thanks for the respones.
Sounds like 20-30 feet is required, from the above posts. I'll get calling around for quality hoses and prices. Update - I have a stock 1970T with a 2.4 motor w/o a front oil cooler. I will need to run oil lines all the way from the VGC porsche stock thermostat. The picture that Scott shows of his front oil cooler is the exact oil cooler I bought for $300 shipped from a man in CA. He builds very solid oil coolers and you can select the size fittings, which he welds on. I picked the male connector for size 12 female connector. I need to fab a bracket. Scott and others, pls post a few close-ups of yours! Thanks,

Home depot 3x3 L bracket. I opened the holes so the M8 harware for the threaded inserts would fit thru. Used a bigger L for the underside with a rubber grommet between the bracket and the cooler.
Here is tip one on this cooler. Be VERY VERY careful putting on the AN fittings the first time. GREASE THEM UP!!!!! I turned them on a few turns ...BY HAND... and the fitting screwed up the threads. I wasnt being gorilla hands and i did not wrench them on. Spent the next hour praying ang cleaning up the threads. Tip two: use 45 deg fittings on the cooler. I tried straights and they hold the bumper out in the front. the 45's pull the line in toward the body quicker. Just what ive learned today. ![]() ![]() ![]()

It appears your front oil cooler has 2 x 45' degree AN fittings.
Hows is the project coming. I plan to buy the steel braided lines from a compamy in VA, at $6.10 p/ft. They sell in bulk all over to race firms. Their AN fitting for -12 rin $10 for straight to angled 45-90 degrees all under $25. Vr,

So far so good. Waiting on the SS mesh from Pegasus to finish the install. Had to play with fittings and fitment. Yes, they are 45's. Had a slight rub issue with the straight ones. Those prices look good, slightly cheaper than ebay.

Is nobody bringing up the question whether or not -12 line is fat enough? I thought the common wisdom was -16 for a front-cooler install. Wasn't that also Bruce Anderson's warning/mantra all along ??

you test fit the bumper over the cooler for placement? looks a bit high. diference in early body with RS bumper and SC body with RSR bumper? BTW it works awesome. My temps at Watkins Glen in the summer dumped. Barely even moved the gauge where year prior it was runnin past halfway.
