"Am I reading correctly here, it takes more pressure to activate the by-pass valve?" Yes you are.. The bypass valve is there to prevent oil starvation if the filter becomes clogged..

So I deduce, it will take more pressure ( compared to Mahle OC-54) to push the oil thru the filter, correct:confused: ergo a "restricted flow" liken to a crushed oil line causing higher oil temps?

Oh wait By-Pass valve is a safety valve from what you are saying correct?

How about the flow data?

"Oh wait By-Pass valve is a safety valve from what you are saying correct?" Yes, that is correct.. The max flow rate is a bit more with Wix filter.. Micron filtering is a bit better with the Wix also.. Based on the comparison information, the Wix filter could be considered a bit better filter.. In the real world, I don't think the stats would really make any difference or sway me to use one filter versus the other..
Back to your original question.. I see no logical reason for either of these filters to affect your oil temps.. Sometimes we have to careful not to start chasing ghosts..;)
Now, if you have a restricted (partly crushed, dented?)oil line, yes that could affect oil temps.. This is a common problem on P-Cars where some moron has put a jack under the oil lines.. This problem would show up regardless of which filter or oil that you use.. So I would throw that out of the discussion on oil filters..

This is a very unscientific observation/analysis of the NAPA GOLD 1283 Oil Filter made by Wix.

I agree with this statement 100%.

Thanks Porf Neel,

The only changes were the Brand of Oil and Oil Filter. Oil Lines have not been damaged.

Well, I will see if the Mahle Filter effects oil temps.

Thanks to all, even the sarcastic ones, I'll Pray for You ;-)

From the many threads I have read about oil related features, I have learned the following.

One person changes to a certain oil and his engine gets hotter. Another changes to the same oil and it gets cooler. Same oil causes a leak in one car after the change, but it stopped a leak in another car. A certain tranny oil made one car shift better, another car shift worse. Changing from X to Y completely transformed one car, changing from Y to X transformed another.

Clearly, from the evidence, our cars are fickle.

Most people recommend oil with ZDDP and Mahle filters. I am sure someone will soon post that they changed to that combo and the engine blew up, but I am sticking to it anyway.

+1 Daniel...

Question--->

Oil pumps are typically gear-on-gear devices....so they are considered "positive displacement" pumps, right? So....a "small" incremental increase in restriction , say, with a higher setting of the oil filter's by-pass valve.....will have NO affect on oil FLOW....correct? It will imoact residual pressures in the oil line system, but this is not like throttling (say) a centrifugal pump, with an altered pressure/flow operating point, if pinched.

Right?

I do agree that our cars are a bit fickle but I am trying to understand the oil temp change and why it occurred.

Weather report states tomorrow will be 75+ degrees so I will take the same route at speed for 20 minutes to see if temps rise or stay at normal operating temps as designed.

BTTT, for Nick.....

DRACO A5OG 02-06-2011 12:30 AM

Unfortunately, temps only reached 69 today, not hot enough to tell if the Mahle filter runs same oil temps or not.

But I still took the top off and enjoyed the ride :D

DRACO A5OG 02-07-2011 10:54 PM

Well, 75 degrees on same Freeway no traffic temps are good on the guage:

Need to wait for hotter ambient temps to really see if the oil temps maintain at proper levels
